16-bit FAT is good for up to 2 GB, if...
64 sector cluster are used. Even if 32 sector clusters are used, it should be able to cover 1 GB.
[link|http://support.microsoft.com/kb/67321|The Gospel] according to Microsoft.
You couldn't be hitting a number of files limit which according to [link|http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File_Allocation_Table|this] is 65,517?
Incidentally, your link shows a 4 GB player. Going to the 1 GB player [link|http://store.digitalriver.com/servlet/ControllerServlet?Action=DisplayPage&Locale=en_US&id=ProductDetailsPage&SiteID=siren&productID=41320200&Env=BASE|page] shows 480 song limit. Could that 480 be some kind of a player limit?

It sounds very much like this problem.
[link|http://www.sirenplayers.com/faqs.php#myaudio|Here]: Q: My audio player is unable to see all of the songs I have transferred. A: This occurs when too many folders are placed on the device with Windows Media Player. To resolve, please follow these steps: To resolve the issue: 1. Connect the player to the PC using the USB cable. 2. Open Windows Media Player. 3. Go to the Sync or Devices tab and delete all content from the player. 4. Go to the Tools menu and select Options. 5. Select the Devices tab, highlight the ILO or Siren player and click on Properties. 6. Uncheck the box "Create Folder Hierarchy on Device" Now, when music is transferred, it will be placed in the root directory of the flash memory disregarding the folder structure and allowing all tracks to be seen. I would assume that the player doesn't care how the songs get on it, as long as it gets all the info it needs. p.18 of the manual seems to cover using drag and drop to transfer the files to it. HTH a bit. BTW, I'm finding [link|http://sourceforge.net/projects/cdexos/|CDex] (Thanks Andy!) is a pretty easy tool for making MP3s, and I'm not having the "access denied" errors any more. It's free. I just have to decide whether "preset standard" is good enough or whether I should go with "preset extreme".... Cheers, Scott.

I'm sitting here trying to understand what kind of bonehead programming will produce this limitation/error. I can only conclude that the people writing software at Microsoft are complete morons. Of course, most of what I see coming from that company tends to support this conclusion as well.

Why isn't it the player's fault?
Why isn't it the player's fault for not supporting "too many folders"? My mp3 player seems to have no such limitations and I use it with WMP.

Why does it only occur with WMP?
I figured that was the key factor.

note to all I dont use ANY folders
drag songs onto ther device. It chokes at 80. If I create a folder I can then put more songs there. The player can see all of the songs but the album dataset gets unuseable. No folders 80 sonfs okay. 80 songs plus one folder no album dataset. thanx,
bill

Using just like a memory stick?
If so, reformat and have another go.

I was going to suggest running chkdsk or similar, too.

That looks eerily familiar.
It *sounds* like you're hitting the file limit in the root directory, but if you were doing that, you wouldn't be able to create the extra folder, either. It looks like the player's firmware has a playlist size limit. Perhaps a firmware upgrade is the go?
Wade.

Good show! Looks like old DOS filenames in root limit.
