Problems downloading images from my new Canon Camera
Hey all,
I got a nice Canon digital camera, the Powershot A530, and I can take photos with it fairly well so far. However, we have been unable to download any of the images yet. When we try, the computer freezes up. Even when he installed the software that came with it, it still freezes.
John said that we had been having problems with Windows Image Acquisition Service. It had been freezing my scanner awhile back, so he put the scanner on some sort of manual operation to cause it to stop. So what we would like to know is if we go buy a media reader, does that piece of hardware also use the same Windows Image Acquisition service, because if it does, we may still have the problem.
Any suggestions would be welcome as to how to solve this issue, thanks!
Brenda
P.S. Edited because I have the A530 not the A540 so I fixed it. Sorry, both numbers were on the manual cover.

Thanks,
I'd kind of like that to be the last option. But I do know it's an option. :)

WinXP? Try a different USB port.
If you're using XP or Win2k it should "just work". If you're using ME or 98 you may need drivers and may have trouble with USB Flash Card readers. I assume you're using XP.
Have you looked at the Canon web site? It says [link|http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=SuprtKnowledgeBaseAct&fcategoryid=221&modelid=12942|here] that if your computer locks up on connecting the camera, you should try a different USB port. If that doesn't help, browse around [link|http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=SupportDetailAct&fcategoryid=221&modelid=12942|here].
Since you have the same problem with the scanner, that's another indication that there's a problem with the USB port.
HTH a bit. Good luck.
Cheers, Scott.

"should" being the operative word
"If you're using XP or Win2k it should "just work"."
That "should" is why I use macs now, because it DOES.

The USB ports seem to have problems
I posted about that under Hardware.
Meanwhile, John was able to get some software called Gphoto2 with a graphical front end called GTkam, downloaded to his Linux computer, and was able to get the photos off the linux computer by burning them to a CD and taking them in here to load them on mine. So we did find a round about way to get the photos off for now, we're just looking for a better way in the long run.
