Thread display layout
Take a look at the thread layout in the comments [link|http://www.theoildrum.com/story/2006/11/15/83857/186|here]. I didn't look at the HTML so I don't know how easily it would fit with the current rendering engine, but I like the look.

You do?
That would drive me insane (yeah, I know - it's not a drive, it's a putt) - especially for long threads...

I would vote against it as well.
The vertical lines become impossible to distinguish when there are too many parallel comments. I think the indentation works well here (especially coupled with the Parent Post links).

Compared to the alternative ...
On a similar thread here, you don't even have the lines to go by. But now that I think about it, maybe don't have the lines all one color.
Both of which are beside the point: In hierarchical file browsers, the line metaphor is pretty well established. What makes it so bad for threaded discussion?

It works fine for a screen or two, at most.
I agree that it's common in file browsers, etc. My favorite file manager - File Commander - uses it in its Tree view. It works well when you can see the beginning and ending posts in the subthread. But without some other queue (color is a possibility) it doesn't provide much useful information if the display is more than a screen long. I think indentation works just as well in those cases, and it's less cluttered.
I haven't thought about this too deeply, but it seems to me that if too much information is on a screen, perhaps the HTML should include [link|http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Folding_editor|"folding"][1] of the subthreads. The issue with that, of course, is that the user then has to click to expand the subthreads.
I wouldn't veto the connecting line segments, but would like them to be a user-option that can be turned off.
My $0.02.

Good for short threads only.
Can you imagine some of our more right-shifted threads with this? Do not adjust your set. Vertical stripes are very slimming.

Not my choice
I honestly couldn't follow it at all.

I think I'd pass on it as well
I especially don't like the concept of the rigorously forced right margin position. While it is true the one of jake123's posts, placed strategically at a high indent level, will force the right matgin out, I'd rather have that htne either a) have the post, and all subordinate posts truncated, or b) end up with 3 or so characters in each column.
