New US tries to silence detainees
[link|http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/11/03/AR2006110301793.html|Washington Post]
The Bush administration has told a federal judge that terrorism suspects held in secret CIA prisons should not be allowed to reveal details of the "alternative interrogation methods" that their captors used to get them to talk.

The government says in new court filings that those interrogation methods are now among the nation's most sensitive national security secrets and that their release -- even to the detainees' own attorneys -- "could reasonably be expected to cause extremely grave damage." Terrorists could use the information to train in counter-interrogation techniques and foil government efforts to elicit information about their methods and plots, according to government documents submitted to U.S. District Judge Reggie B. Walton on Oct. 26.

I'm not one to bandy such things around lightly but that is simply Evil.

New You're only figuring that out now
The rest of the world figured out that the current regime in Washington was evil years ago. The fact that the US citizenry has returned them to power through two election cycles (ie- both executive and legislature; coming into third cycle now) has led most of the Rest Of The World to conclude that the American People are evil too.

Unfortunately, most of the Rest Of The World doesn't have the same kind of access to US domestic media programming that we in Canada do (Mexico could, but there's the language barrier), so we know you're not evil, just misinformed and misled and lacking in elemental curiousity, but it's going to be hard to convince people of that.

For example, the fact that the potential cause of the fall of the Republicans in the legislature is lack of success in Iraq and a congressman trying to bone pages and NOT the effective suspension of citizen's essential liberties by executive fiat with legislative approval, the retroactive approval of and protection of torturers against potential civil and criminal punishment, or the ongoing question of whether or not the state can set up star chambers to keep their dirty little secrets from getting out does not reflect well on US journalism, the US body politic, nor the citizenry of the USA.

Succinct. Too much truthiness in there, ever to be read by the regular shopper.
Wish many of your gems would make it into a few Op-Ed columns, South of you (no flattery intended.)

a general eclectic discussion, and ~ to yours: re how the world went from despising [the CIA, the US govt... but not 'Americans'] to present situation, re condoning of torture, etc. Now it Is 'Americans'.

Observed also,
Most Americans have no idea where the CIA is operating.. what they are doing there.
And their attention span is so short; they only realize where a country is, when there's a war.
(They think America Is the map.)
Isabel missed mention of your devastating point re the utter insouciance concerning our once-called Bill of Rights, but I'm sure she'd nod head in approbation.

Now.. if today's results go sour; if, In the End there is no clear-cut repudiation (whether or not the Diebold-method proves to be at the root of many contentions) - I don't think there will be a single apologist left on Terra, except the whores and their corporate sponsors.
