One of my grandfathers was captured by the germans at Caporetto in 1917 and spent rest of the war in a POW officer's camp in northern Germany, where the prisoner's survival depended on food packages from their families back home (Red Cross packages came through), because the german food situation was so dire. The starving german camp guards had to watch their prisoners open packages of food they could only dream of for themselves.

The more things change, the more they're totally different.
