New Its not the measuring thats the issue
its that he has no clear alternative position or "new idea" besides run. Him being on national tv and saying this at this point is feeding into the Republican message.

And while the war may not be popular, I don't thing a full retreat is any more popular.

New we need to either get out or get all the way in
sitting in armored enclaves is just getting our kids killed for little reason.

New Yup.
If it's really a fight for our way of life and our civilization, etc., then we shouldn't be messing around. If we could win WWII in 4 years, we should have been able to do what it takes to have a reasonably peaceful Baghdad and Basra in the 3.5+ years we've been there.

But I don't know that there's the will to do what it takes at this point.

[link|http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/10/24/AR2006102400909.html|Kagan] makes some good points in his OpEd, but the larger question of why it's in our national interest to ratchet up our involvement to cover for Bush's mistake isn't convincingly answered IMO. Staying too long may well have worse consequences than leaving too early.

Cheers,
Scott.
New Aye - and any project manager will tell you
that lack of deadlines guarantees lack of progress.

So we need a timetable. We might revise it. But with no deadlines/milestones, there is no advancement.

New yabbut...
In today's binary political calculus (not the math, rather the stuff that sticks to your teeth), timetable == cut'n'run (at least, if you're a Repo mouthpiece).

New Heard an interesting opinion
that makes sense to me.

As long as we prop up the government, they can take potshots at the Sunni's and hide behind Uncle Sam's apron without fear of reprisal. If we simply leave, then they HAVE to make something work. IOW, we are enabling the violence. Toss in the fact that 70% think its OK to kill occupiers and I don't see any better plan.

Give then 6 months notice and tell them they'd better have their act together by then, 'cause we are SO OUTTA THERE.
