Our 2nd grade curriculum does a unit on the eye and every year the kids get to observe a dissection. What fun! The kids were troopers this year. No squeamishness. They got right in there, touching, exploring, even smelling. One of the eyes had a the lid attached, complete with eye lashes. I made it wink at the kids. They were quite amused. We dissected out all the major stuctures. By the end of the class those kids understood the gross anatomy of the eye and even some physiology. I was very proud of my daughter when I scooped out the eye jelly and she said, Mom, that's the vitreous humor, not jelly. We dissected out the cornea, iris, lens, retina, sclera and optic nerve.
At the end of the class one of the little girls said "Science is cool!".
Ahhh. My job was done.
