Welcome to IWETHEY!

New Got a question from one of my co-workers...
Hey,

You have access to a good group of geeks on I, We, They\ufffd Can you post a question about "Automated Testing Tools". I'd like to find out different people's experiences (both uber technical and not so technical) from the point of creating test cases, maintaining test cases, ease of use, ease of the interface, etc.

Thanks!!!

Thanks In Advance!

We use Empirix. While it's good for doing rote "click here, then here, look for this string" types of testing, it's completely GUI-based and unscriptable from the command line. We have to run it manually as opposed to making it part of our build. In its favor it's better at testing Javascript and the like because it runs its own copy of IE. Windows only, natch.

We also use Grinder, an open-source tool for load testing (although it can be used for unit testing too). It's Java and daemon-based with an optional GUI, and very flexible.

In addition to what AdminiScott suggested, I've also seen CruiseControl used to to automated builds and automatically run a project's unit tests. [link|http://cruisecontrol.sf.net/|http://cruisecontrol.sf.net/]

New Look at Seapine
[link|http://seapine.com/qawizard.html|QA Wizard] is point-and-click, but you can modify the recorded script. It's got logical flow control, you can pull in data from SQL Server, Access, Excel, or internal grids. It can run a single instance of IE, so the script support is good, or you can run multiple instances headless for load testing.

If you want to, it integrates with the rest of the Seapine tools, or with SourceSafe and some other issue tracking systems. It helps to know a bit of VB if you want to do any complex stuff, but the point-click-and-edit capbilities are pretty good. And way cheaper than Winrunner, Mercury or Rational Robot.
