We didn't do it you can't prove we did it
OTOH, I've been over that bridge a number of times, and my son used to go over it twice daily on his way to rehab.
This is the second highway bridge collapse in recent years; either there's something wrong with the Engineering profession in Quebec or else they're not getting sent out to look things over when they should be. Hard to say which, yet.

Although when I awoke Saturday
you would have been hard pressed to tell me that a bridge had not fallen on my head:-)

Look on the bright side
I walked into a house in the throes of some nasty gastrointestinal bug, and spent the weekend taking care of all three of 'em that had it.
Picture that with a big hangover (or don't, it would prolly be better for you if you didn't).
Only came back to K-town last night as I was doing the taking care of the sick family thing until Monday evening. Very tired today, and feel like I'm coming down with a cold, probably from the daughter. Blech.
That said, had a great time Fri. night.

Oh yes
Friday was fun.
I nominate that any time 2 members of the group seriously tie one on together that we call it a "shizzy"...memorializing our newfound friend forever for the thread they wish never occurred.
And yes...friday we had a serious shizzy goin on.
Glad you made it out with all pieces intact ;-)

Well, it does help explain the crankiness
Nobody had a very good time this weekend, what with everyone being sick and all that.

I second that motion!
It will be an honor to have the act of tying one on with one or more of your beep friends to be named the "shizzy". We will be issuing a handbook outling the endless hilarious antics you might be able to include in your own similation of the "Band Camp Meeting". We will be available this Friday in Bionerd's humble abode. Further communication is forthcoming as to when we will be opening up the phone lines for our 2nd "Band Camp Meeting".
Thank you again for the honor, I graciously accept.

In this case an engineer had just been sent out . . .
. . due to reports of falling pieces, and declared the bridge safe.

There is apparently a question of whether the person that
went out was actually an engineer.

Everybody's an engineer
Even my dad was elevated from janitor to maintenance engineer.
The question should be if he was the appropriate engineer.
A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort. (Herm Albright)

Ok, let me clarify
they should have sent an iron ring Civil Engineer. If they sent a shovel-leaning flunky, that indicts the administration of the Quebec transportation safety administration. If they sent a real engineer, it indicts him.
If they don't have an iron ring, they're not an engineer; all other people are simply marketing for the sake of stroking and wage inflation. Just my take on that.
My guess is they sent the flunky, not the engineer, and they're running around trying to figure out how they're all going to cover their asses. Sadly, some of the pols are helping them.
Fortunately, the Quebecois are rightly pissed. It's clear that this isn't a design issue, but a maintenance issue, and that this was an accident waiting to happen; it's not like it's not the first time that this has happened. The last time, they hung the engineer out to dry, and he deserved to be hung out to dry too. This time, I think they're probably looking for one to hang out to dry (even to the extent of looking back at the last bridge inspection in early '05) but I don't think it's going to wash, as structures like this should be inspected by qualified people at least annually, and perhaps even quarterly considering the number of cars going over and under the bridges in question.

problem is that the people doing the inspecting
are there because of patronage as opposed to skill levels. Unless things have changed. Contracting out wouldnt help because it would be the same people regardless. thanx, bill

That is true
There may be some serious infighting as to which party is responsible: PQ or Liberal. OTOH, they might both just shove it under the carpet so as to not have to deal with the mess and to keep the gravy train on track.
