New Ghosts
I've mentioned here before -- though I suspect it was before Bio joined us -- that Michael Shermer, the president of The Sceptic's Society, did an experiment on this. Subjected to a strong magnetic field, he had a strong sense of someone being in the room with him. The suspicion was that people with exceptional sensitivity to magnetic fields would experience this in places with unusually strong fields.

The research he's done shows that the basic structure of witchcraft, ghost and alien-abduction stories is fairly constant. The specific analysis provided by the subjects is colored by their environment and expectations, but the actual sensation seems to be common to all three.

New Spent a lot of hours in/around magnetic fields -
'DC' and pulsed; some with gaps (the area of uniform field across the pole tips) large enough to get into.

(Once placed head near pole-tips of a pulsed 15 KGauss field - more likely ~5000 gauss at my spot. On that one, eyes closed - 'saw' bluish sparks, at the rep-rate of 6 pps.)

Nothing wraithlike.. in, above or near the jelloware or its I/O.

'Definition of a tragedy - a theory killed with a fact' [experiment?

New You merely proved *you* didn't experience it
Sample size of one, and all that.

Found the [link|http://www.skeptics.ca/articles/shermer-OBE.html|reference]:
Neuroscientist Michael Persinger, in his laboratory at Laurentian University in Sudbury, Canada, for example, can induce all of these experiences in subjects by subjecting their temporal lobes to patterns of magnetic fields (I tried it and had a mild out-of-body experience).
There's lots of people shooting holes in Persinger's work, but if Shermer is saying he had a physical experience I'd say there's something to it.

New Validity of "sample size one" depends on intensity.
Sample size one shot in head with 9mm parabellum at 1 meter - died - proves nothing because sample size of one. Need more samples.

Actually, this magnetic experiment does need more samples and at not so much over normal intensity.

New You ever watch those medical emergency shows on TLC?
They have people all the time who got shot in the head and it didn't hit anything important.
