New How to configure DNS from GoDaddy
Up until now, I've used NetworkSolutions for purchasing domain names. Its pricey, but dead easy and they handle the DNS.

But it seems GoDaddy will allow me to register my domain names for 1/3 the cost. So I bought one. It seems to set up DNS though, I'm supposed to give it the addresses of two DNS servers - even if I were to set one up on my box, I only could have one and it insists on two. So what's the catch? Does GoDaddy not provide DNS for domains your register with them?

I'm confused.

New I see your problem
To Unpark (Activate) Your Domain Name

1. Log in to your Account Manager.
2. Under the Domain Names section, select Manage Domains.
3. Click on the domain you want to unpark.
4. In the Domain Details section on the right, click the plus sign next to Namservers Summary to expand it.
5. Select Click here to see details or to modify.
6. If you are hosting with us, select Default Hosting Name Servers. If you want to use other name servers, select Custom Name Servers and enter the name servers that you would like your domain name to point to.
7. Click Save Changes.

If they are not hosting you, give them the nameservers that you will add. Primary and a failover I suspect. Looks like you will be managing your own domain. Now if you do that look into milter and get aboard the DKIM train :-)
thanx,
bill

New That's what I was afraid of
I've only got one server - how do I end up with a primary and failover?

New dyndns.org can do it for $25/yr
They have a static DNS option.

New Might as well use NetworkSolutions
because its cheaper than GoDaddy + DynDNS.

New Re: How to configure DNS from GoDaddy
I've got a VPS at GoDaddy myself, but that domain name is registered with Names4Ever/APlus.net. What I had to do to get DNS working was to send N4E an email telling them the IP address of my DNS server(s) (ns1 and ns2 were on the same box) so that they could be registered with the root servers of the intarweb.

Once that was taken care of, all my DNS problems vanished.

OK, how do you do that? Run them on different ports? Does GoDaddy's interface allow specification of alternative ports? (I didn't see that).

To be perfectly honest, I can't rightly say. DNS isn't my forté. I set 'em up inside Plesk as two NS records for the domain, I send an email to Names4Ever telling 'em the IP address for the server (only 1 IP address), and it works.
