Sad comment from the AG though
From memory: Every day is September 12th for those of us tasked with protecting our citizens. Yup, constant state of paranoia, fear of the unknown, unquestioning support for seemingly-random acts by police forces ... great way to live.

Cynic in me says that part has to do with Lieberman loss.
Fight terrorism and stay the course.
The new policy on "carry on" fluids on the other hand makes sense. Only lack of imagination delayed that policy.

Here's an idea
You know that little box they put in the check-in line? The one with the sign that says all your shit has to fit inside it for it to count as carry-on? How about we just enforce that one?
I know people want to get off the plane and walk out without having to wait for the baggage carousel. But there is no good reason for the airlines to allow duffel bags as carry-on. If they just made you check more stuff, most of these issues would go away.

Dumb one
Lucky me gets to board an airplane tomorrow to Michigan to bury my grandmother on Saturday, returning Monday. All I need is a garment bag with a suit, couple changes of socks and undies, basic toiletries, and my laptop computer (so I can continue to pay the rent since I'm back to hourly work).
Its a small duffle bag but it will save me at least a couple hours at either end and I'd be able to breeze right through.
Only now I. AM. FUCKED.
There will now be no point in bringing the computer. The airlines better bring back meals since I can't bring my own or I'm gonna be one PISSY LOW BLOOD SUGARED ASSHOLE by the time I finish my 6 hour cross country ordeal.
On domestic flights, I'd rather take my chances.

I agree with the need for food service
What I'm talking about is the people who bring on things the size of a [link|http://www.brandonblog.homestead.com/files/blog-capt.1060870142.jpg|seabag]. The mad dash to be the first to board so you get to use the entire overhead is ridiculous.
The airlines need to figure out a way to make checking baggage -- and picking it up on the other end -- less of a hassle. The hour-plus wait for the carousel, and the well-earned reputation for misplacing luggage, is the reason people started carrying on so damn much to begin with.

Where do you guys fly?
I regularly (although less frequently) fly through O'Hare, and there simply isn't a "hour-plus wait for the carousel" at The World's Most Congested Airport.

I ask you this, does that not also logically mean that 68% approve of the job he's not doing? Think about it. I haven't." — Stephen Colbert, at the White House Correspondent's Dinner 29Apr06

Perverse reality
As busy as O'Hare is, if they didn't figure out a way to push people and their stuff through quickly, the backlog would be unmanageable. For them, it appears it was worth the expense to develop a good system.
At smaller airports, like Cleveland Hopkins, you've got time between flights for people to stand around waiting for their luggage.

Seattle and Denver recently
which was the first time I checked bags in years (traveled with the little one).
It was a full hour to hour and a half after deplaning before I was able to depart the airport in both locations.
