New "Let's return to the pure values of the revolution"
[link|http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/programmes/5217424.stm|BBC]:

Execution of a teenage girl
A television documentary team has pieced together details surrounding the case of a 16-year-old girl, executed two years ago in Iran.

On 15 August, 2004, Atefah Sahaaleh was hanged in a public square in the Iranian city of Neka.

Her death sentence was imposed for "crimes against chastity".

[...]

As a signatory of the International Convention on Civil and Political Rights, Iran has promised not to execute anyone under the age of 18.

But the clerical courts do not answer to parliament. They abide by their religious supreme leader, Ayatollah Khamenei, making it virtually impossible for human rights campaigners to call them to account.

[...]

During the making of the documentary about Atefah's death the production team telephoned Judge Haji Rezai to ask him about the case, but he refused to comment.

The human rights organisation Amnesty International says it is concerned that executions are becoming more common again under President Mahmoud Ahmedinajad, who advocates a return to the pure values of the revolution.

The judiciary have never admitted there was any mishandling of Atefah's case.

:-(

It's outrageous that these "religious" tyrants can get away with this barbarism.

Cheers,
Scott.

New Lets face reality - there is no cure for Islam
Better to just let them kill each other and stay out of it.

The religion is hard wired to prevent any revision or reinterpretation to allow it to progress beyond a mentality that was primitive in the 12th century. Anyone who tries to moderate it or leave it will be killed.
[link|http://www.aaxnet.com|AAx]
New Dunno.
Too many of the jihadists think that if Islam ever had a presence in a country, then it's an Islamic land and should be returned to their control. E.g. [link|http://www.bbc.co.uk/religion/religions/islam/history/spain/spain3.shtml|Spain], [link|http://www.bbc.co.uk/religion/religions/islam/history/mughal/index.shtml|India], etc. Most people who live there now would pretty strongly disagree with that view.

I don't think we (Western Democracies) can just withdraw inside our national borders and let the pieces fall where they may. We're too dependent on outside resources, and outside trade, and we learned in earlier wars that it's ultimately very dangerous to us to let violent expansionist ideologies run amok.

It's hard to see this conflict between jihadist Islam and the West ending without a major conflagration, though. If you believe [link|http://www.kunstler.com/mags_diary18.html|Kunstler], it might happen fairly soon. :-(

Cheers,
Scott.
(Who generally tries to be optimistic about the future...)
New Oh, I don't mean they should be allowed . . .
. . to be expansionist - in fact I think they need to be restricted drastically, a lot more drastically than they are now. Wherever Islam is there is senseless and cowardly slaughter, particularly where they are a minority.

As for a bloody confrontation, I've been predicting that for some time. Given the current course I expect they will use Western technology primitively, but to do such dreadful damage the reaction will be severe. There will be a slaughter of Islam - millions will die and Mecca will be slagged.

Unfortunately, most who die, on both sides, will be innocents. That's the way it always is.

New So is Christianity
Islam does have strict rules against further revisions of the holy book. But it also has two strong counter balances. Much of the religions rules are not in the Koran, they are in the various Hadiths and other material that is not absolute. And second, it lacks a single central authority, it's rather decentralized in the way many protestant sects are.

The Catholics Church's absolute final determiniation of what constitutes their bible, creed and basic beliefs combined with loyalty to the Papacy actually goes further in placing absolute power in one the hands of a small group and disallowing further revision

Didn't stop the Christians from breaking up and revising the whole thing.

The US is already starting to corrupt the Muslims, particularly Muslim women introduced to American idea of equality. It's slow and fitful, but it is the path to progress.

"So don't pay attention to the approval ratings that say 68% of Americans disapprove of the job this man is doing. I ask you this, does that not also logically mean that 68% approve of the job he's not doing? Think about it. I haven't."
Stephen Colbert, at the White House Correspondent's Dinner 29Apr06
New Thank you, Jay.
Nice to see *someone* was paying attention. Mark my words, the women will rise up and the men shall Pay! Do you hear me! All those years of oppression are building up like a powderkeg. They have no idea who they are messing with.

(okay, Fembomb mode off)

Have a nice day.

New The men *always* pay
I've read the articles about women picking up the check. They're pure propaganda, it doesn't happen in real life.</grygus>

New All Right, Simma Down Now.
I'm not declaring war against all men. I'm just rooting for the muslim women to rise up against the nutcase fundy muslim men who have been treating them like chattel for generations. More power to 'em.

New Hey - you're supposed to be attacking drewk!
I know exactly what you meant. If you check my post a little south of here you'll see we have plenty of newly rejected Muslim women in Los Angeles - and special women's help centers serving them.

They're culturally very conservative and have a real hard time giving up the tent and scarf. They've been kept in isolation as much as possible and lack education and any skills beyond Mideast household - so I'm not sure what happens to them. I guess that's what the women's help centers are for, but social services tend to be inadequate in this country.

Mideast men are mostly stinking shit, and they're getting rich running the porn industry out in the Valley (the U.S. center for porn) and various real estate scams. I have no sympathy for them here and I have none for them in the Mideast.

I seriously doubt Muslim women in the U.S. can have much effect on Islam outside this country. They're viewed as run-aways and cast-offs living in the bowels of the Great Satan - somewhat lower than camel dung in the eyes of right thinking Muslims elsewhere. As long as the men can just go home and get another one they have little standing with them either.

Not at all a good place to be - but better than where they came from.

New Well, we have plenty of that corruption in Los Angeles.
No matter how hard the Muslim guys try to keep their wives isolated, every few years they have to go home and get a new one because the old one "went bad".

Unfortunately moderate Islam is pretty much confined to the U.S. because it's the only place moderates aren't promptly killed. I understand the enclaves in Europe are quite hard line.

Apologists are always pointing to the Hadiths saying "it isn't in the Koran", but that isn't stopping people from being killed. In a recent case that got worldwide publicity a convert from Islam still had to be transported to Italy to save his life while his death sentence was on appeal. It doesn't matter that the Hadiths are not absolute if they are treated as if they were.

Yes, Islam is decentralized, which seems to mean that any cleric who pleases can send his death squads anywhere he pleases and kill anyone he pleases to kill, with the full authority of Islam.

Yes, the Christians are plenty bad enough, thank you, but we've got them somewhat under control, at least for now, but some of them are drooling over what the Muslims are allowed to do so we have to keep an eye on them.

Abu Hamza was kicked out of his own mosque by moderates. Terrorist bombings and the Iraq war haven't helped but moderates don't get promptly killed in the UK. They may be involved in power struggles with hardliners and integration into British society has been faltering but murder isn't common.

Choose Life. Choose a job. Choose a career. Choose a family. Choose a fucking big television, choose washing machines, cars, compact disc players and electrical tin openers. Choose good health, low cholesterol, and dental insurance. Choose fixed interest mortgage repayments. Choose a starter home. Choose your friends. Choose leisurewear and matching luggage. Choose DIY and wondering who the fuck you are on a Sunday morning. Choose sitting on that couch watching mind-numbing, spirit-crushing game shows, stuffing fucking junk food into your mouth. Choose rotting away at the end of it all, pishing your last in a miserable home, nothing more than an embarrassment to the selfish, fucked up brats you spawned to replace yourself. Choose your future. Choose life... But why would I want to do a thing like that? I chose not to choose life. I chose somethin' else. And the reasons? There are no reasons. Who needs reasons when you've got heroin?

New Well, it's good to hear that . . .
. . some progress might occurr - if it isn't just an exception. Nothing would please me more than to be proven completely wrong and see Islam grow up, but I'm not counting on it.

Here in the U.S. Muslim leaders are so concerned with the increasing disrespect their religion is held in they recently met with the Dali Lama to see if he could advise them how to build a peaceful image. They could try being peaceful, of course, but that might be too hard in a religion based on "conversion by the sword".

With every story of "Islamic justice" and Sharia law we read or see on TV, respect for Islam as a "major world religion" declines another notch on its way to being though of as just another violent street gang.

New I wish Islam was that moderate in Australia.
Though I don't know what measures those in control are taking. Islam has certainly been in the spotlight, and a number of people have successfully said publically that the Muslem leaders need to be a lot more visible in reigning in immoderates. The riots at [link|http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cronulla|Cronulla] last year was a seeding point for people being more open about the issue.
