New Hey Gryg and Bionerd - comments please
Is it all a setup to sell derivative products, or should I just go out and buy a bunch of coconut oil to use all the time?

Bio: You may want to focus on the antibacterial aspects of Monolaurin in the sinuses.

New I'm not going to vouch for their list of . . .
. . weight loss and "cure-all" claims without a whole lot of study - and I don't have time for that right now.

What I have found through my researches is:
  • Mainstream "health professionals" say Coconut oil bad, bad! This is based on a single study known to be completely invalid because it used chemically modified coconut oil - and because it's mostly "evil" saturated fats.
  • Coconut oil has the highest percentage of saturated fats of any oil - way higher than pig fat.
  • The implication of saturated fat as "extremely bad for your heart" is based on crap science financed by the seed grain industry and promoted by the American Heart Association - the same people who were promoting deadly trans fats until just recently.
  • In the 1800's America practically lived on pig fat, and there was no big heart disease or cancer problem (as publically pointed out by one elderly doctor at the AMA's kick-off for their highly questionalble "Heart Healthy Diet"). Cancer and heart disease seem to have come into play in a big way with the transition to vegetable (seed) oils.
  • Demographic evidence is that Coconut oil is very healthy - whole areas of the world cook only with coconut oil and do not have any health problems from it - in fact quite the opposite.
  • Populations that live on pig fat don't have those problems either.
  • The article recommends you use only "virgin" coconut oil. That isn't widely available in the U.S. because it stinks. What's available here is "deodorized" coconut oil, and nobody seems to have a problem with that.
  • You can go to an ethnic grocery (serving Southern India, Southeast Asian, Philippine communities) and get a gallon of coconut oil for what the "health purveyors" want for a pint.
  • I don't use a lot of coconut oil because it has a smoke point of only 350°F, and normal frying temperature is 375°F, so I use Olive Pommace which goes to 460°F for most frying - or if the temperature is lower "Pure" olve oil whch goes to 410°F. When oil smokes it breaks down into who knows what - can't be good.
  • I avoid polyunsaturated oils (corn, soy, etc.) like the plague. Heat quickly turns them rancid and racid oils are carcinogenic. The fast food industry found normal vegetable oils turned rancid so fast they'd have to change their oil twice a day, while beef tallow was good for about 30 days.
  • New seed oils are being developed by genetic engineering (mostly the breeding kind still) that imitate the composition of olive oil at lower cost. These are not commonly available at this time but are being test run by the fast food industry. They've been using trans fats to avoid the rancidity problem but they want to get away from those due to adverse publicity.
  • So yes, I consider coconut oil to be good stuff - so long as you don't overheat it - use it like virgin olive oil (actually it goes about 30°F higher than Virgin olive) and you're just fine. The flavor's fine too.

Here we have a game that combines the charm of a Pentagon briefing with the excitement of double-entry bookkeeping. I don't get it.
