the mouse of might
I expected not to like it. So far (four months in) I like it very much indeed. The scrollball is extremely responsive.
The only downside is that occasionally the cursor teleports—vanishes for a few seconds and/or appears suddenly and arbitrarily somewhere on that vast screen real estate without apparent reference to any hand movements I might have undertaken. All told, though, a negligible annoyance.

Cursor Teleportation
Seems to be a feature of optical mice of all stripes.
Sounds good. I may well check one out.

Re: Cursor Teleportation
I may well check one out. You do understand, do you not, that your November 20" Core Duo will include the MM as part of the package? cordially,

No, I didn't.
Thanks for the heads up - you just saved me 50ish quid.

Re: Cursor Teleportation
Any ideas why optical mice exhibit this behaviour? I do find it rather annoying.
I have 3 optical mice, an old Logitech Cordless MouseMan, a new MX1000 and a notebook-sized cordless optical that came with my laptop. The weird thing is, I've only ever experienced cursor teleportation with the MouseMan and the MX1000.

I've only seen it on mouse pads with nonuniform covers.
E.g. my wife's Mac G5 optical mouse pointer will jump around quite frequently when used on a mouse pad with a print of van Gogh's "Irises", but works perfectly on an old Micron mouse pad with a uniform blue cover. Her optical mouse on her Mac at work would jump around when used on a wood desk without a mouse pad, but works fine with one (also with a uniform cover).
Since it looks at reflected light to figure out how it's being moved, it makes sense to me that if the reflectivity is drastically changing quickly that it might get confused.
Cheers, Scott.

Much as it pains me to say it...
...Microsoft optical mice are just about the best I've used.
I have a Wireless Intellimouse Explorer 2.0 on the Mini (the smooth tilt wheel is funky):

and an original Intellimouse Explorer on the PC (mine is substantially less nice to look at after 3 years):

Neither has ever missed a beat.

I like the Logitech Trackman Wheel myself. 8 kB.
[link|http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/products/details/US/EN,CRID=839,parentCRID=833,CONTENTID=5002|Logitech]. When you have a desk as messy as mine, you need a pointing device that can stay stationary.

It's not ideal if you're a lefty though. Fortunately, I'm not. :-)
Cheers, Scott.

I have two optical mice
One's a cheap-arse $5 job, bought second hand from a market, and the other's a [link|http://us.kensington.com/html/5465.html|Kensington PilotMouse Bluetooth].
My mousemat for the cheap-arse mouse is the cardboard backing of a notepad, and yes it has occasional teleportation issues. Much less than when I using it directly on the laminate of the desk.
The Kensington mouse is used on the I-can't-believe-it's-not-Suede of my lounge, and it has never, ever teleported.
I'm almost inclined to do the experiment - swap the mice over and see if it's the mouse or the surface that is to blame. Will let you know.
Two out of three people wonder where the other one is.
