KIEV, Ukraine -- A lion killed a man who climbed into its enclosure at the Kiev Zoo, police said Monday.
The lion attacked the 45-year-old Ukrainian late Sunday after he used a rope to climb down into an enclosure with four lions, said police spokesman Volodymyr Polishchuk.
Ukrainian TV channel NTN broadcast interviews with witnesses who said the man told them that he believed God would not allow the lions to hurt him.
According to Reuters, an official said, "The man shouted: 'God will save me, if he exists,' lowered himself by a rope into the enclosure, took his shoes off and went up to the lions."
Polishchuk said the man, who was not identified, was acting aggressively and one of the lions seized him by the throat. The man died at the scene.
Zoo officials could not immediately be reached for comment.

First, you're not allowed to test Him. Anyone who believes that it could work should know that it won't work.

Yevheniy Kirilyuk said the 45-year-old Ukrainian of Azerbaijani origin, who descended into the lions' enclosure on a rope and died when a lioness attacked, biting his throat, had been seen near the enclosure with four lions earlier. He said the man had asked attendants questions about lions' habits.
Ukraine's Interior Ministry said earlier Monday that he had died instantly.
Before his death, the man appeared to say a prayer, entered the zoo's Beast Island surrounded by a deep moat, tied a rope to the lion's enclosure, and descended. Having a rope indicates that he did some planning before entering the cage. I'm a little curious about his religious upbringing. If he believed the story of Daniel, he apparently was taught a different version than [link|http://www.keyway.ca/htm2002/lionden.htm|this one].
