Easier way.
Very publicly fire one user at random for excessive web use.
Observe HTTP traffic drop at router.
Job done!

I would think being sea creatures that when they eliminate, it's just all sort of liquidy. I guess some sort of chemical analysis tool, but considering the above, I don't think you're going to get too much from topological analysis of the squid's log.
