Microsoft's famous quality strikes again.
One of my clients is an appliance repair shop (no, not NAS devices, washers and dryers and such). They've got a Debian server and some Windows 98 SE workstations.
The staff depends on several parts info and drawing look-up programs with huge amounts of data for all the major appliance manufacturers. These programs stopped working on all the computers within a few days time.
An office person tried to reinstall the programs. They installed but they still wouldn't work. They claimed they couldn't open data files even though they had the correct path info and the files were there.
Turns out Microsoft put out some patches for Windows 98 SE one of which disabled Microsoft's MDAC database engine. Real bright action by the boys of Redmond - but at least we know the employees are faithfully getting their security patches from Microsoft Update.

OT: Still own any Microsoft stock?
Last week, I talked my wife into dumping the Microsoft stock that she bought last May. After commissions, it was a net loss of $9. $25 in dividends mitigates that just a tad.
That ~$2700 investment was "dead money"!
Ah, free at last! :)

Yeah, I haven't changed anything.
Inez, my stock brokeress, agrees Microsoft's going nowhere, but I haven't needed to sell anything yet. It's only 1.6% of assets and my paper loss is a whopping $323 so I'm not giving it much thought right now.
More dear to my thoughts is that years ago when Inez set up this portfolio for my mother she packed it with major oil companies and I understand they're doing OK right now.

Re: Buy a Hummer!
I've got it beat on the guzzling front. I get 9-10 mpg with the motor home.

Well, that's driving a max 62 mph.
Wind resistance is a major factor.

He just doesn't take as many rest stops
Particularly not the ones with the guy with flashing lights behind him. :-)

He also has...
Cruise Control.
He can set cruise control, then get up and goto the bathroom in his RV's toilet. No pit-stop needed.
Of course other things *may* need to be addressed when using traditional Cruise Control.

There's no hurry, I'm on a permanent vacation! :)
I did have to go 80 to find a merge hole in rush hour traffic into the right lane so I could then take an exit on some expressway in San Antonio. There appeared to be a temporary shortage of courtesy in that part of Texas at the time.

Not quite - but they're rushing out the last updates . . .
. . which is probably why this mess happend. Of course, with a about 1/3 of American business still on Win98 they may have to do a few patches long after "end of life". Of course, Win98 is becoming safer as worm and virus writers presume it isn't worth the bother.
