Happy Mardi Gras, Yall!
Seeing as how the day is almost over (and is over for our furrin brethren), I just had to wish everybody a pleasant Fat Tuesday.
Go crazy, for tomorrow a bunch of people will begin the 40 days of Lent.
Throw me something, Mister! Amy

But here, it's not 'til Saturday!
That is, (potentially NSFW) [link|http://mardigras.org.au/|Mardi gras] from a Sydney point of view, anyway. :)
But as you say - Happy Mardi Gras!

How can "Fat Tuesday" be on a Saturday? That's just wrong.

You gotta get to Michigan
Big Polish Catholic population out here. Us Poles eat paczkis on Fat Tuesday in preparation for fasting on Ash Wednesday. It's a grand tradition. Now mind you, I dont do the fasting thing (I'm not even doing the Catholic thing these days), but I'll never pass up an opportunity to eat a donut on steroids. Especially the lemon-filled ones.

Speaking of "not doing the Catholic thing" ...
My favorite Fridays-in-Lent meal: a bacon-cheeseburger. Between Kosher laws, Catholic Lenten rules, the Hindu cow thing, Vegan objections, etc. I manage to piss off 80% of the world's population with each bite. And, it's yummy.

And Fat Tuesday
is the only day of the year that REAL Polish bakeries on Milwaukee Avenue make them.
Down here in Tejas, where they've already bastardized kolaches, three bakeries were totally clueless when I asked them if they were going to make paczkis so I could order in advance.

"Chicago to my mind was the only place to be. ... I above all liked the city because it was filled with people all a-bustle, and the clatter of hooves and carriages, and with delivery wagons and drays and peddlers and the boom and clank of freight trains. And when those black clouds came sailing in from the west, pouring thunderstorms upon us so that you couldn't hear the cries or curses of humankind, I liked that best of all. Chicago could stand up to the worst God had to offer. I understood why it was built--a place for trade, of course, with railroads and ships and so on, but mostly to give all of us a magnitude of defiance that is not provided by one house on the plains. And the plains is where those storms come from." -- E.L. Doctorow
