since all I do all day anyway is figger out better ways to do mail as an ISP I could prolly help.
General rules for most providers
connect, run rbl's including DHCP lists (most servers shouldnt run in that space.)
reverse DNS, does imrics.net match the IP you are coming from
if so pass thru, if not (local policies apply from refuse to score points)
are you trying to send me data before hello is done (spraying)
are you sending me a ton of receiptients?
Do all of your messages look the same?
data section,
examine message for spam signatures, is there links in the message that go back to known spammers?
does vee@gra or other permutations show up. Does a hash of the message body match the hashes of known spams?
do DKIM check if mail purports to be from Yahoo or other dkim compliant senders
validate to see if receiptiant is valid
check user white/black lists
then maybe let the mail in for further checking.
reverse DNS is important because if I claim to be from foo.bar but my address resolves to fsckingspam.tv that is a flag.

A bug in all systems?
You say I refuse to see reality - well - the reality is that my mail works. Since you guys apparently think that's freaky, I wouldn't mind being shown why... Simply asserting that's reality, with no explanation of how my server can actually do what it does, does not motivate me to make any changes.
I do like the implications of Box's explanation though - if WEIGHT is given to each point, and reverse DNS is only one tick off on the factors that determine whether something is spam or not, that would explain why it works. He's the first one to do any kind of explanation (other than what reverse DNS lookups do), however.
Look - I WILL set up my own DNS if I have to. First, though, I'd just relay through my ISPs mailserver. I did that the last time I really wanted to send mail to warhead. So far though, I haven't had to (except for that one time). You said that reverse DNS keeps mail from going through to AOL and Comcast - Heck, I test new configs against those ISPs, among others. I'm telling you that reverse DNS has NEVER stopped mail to those ISPs. They never give me trouble. Not accepting THAT does not make ME the one denying reality.

Our network admin was just bit by that
Exchange wasn't connecting to the data store. MS support can't explain why. 10 hours on the phone passes, examining AD, DNS, etc, etc.
Then it starts working. MS takes credit, can't give any kind of satisfactory explanation, tried claiming it wasn't working before, that it never worked (though IRL everything worked relatively well for a long time).
This morning it dropped again.
Stochastic computing and all that.

Please use another outbound mail server.

clearly the issue
nslookup imrics.net gives me your 216.X.X.X address, nslookup of the 216 address gives me your provider. As an ISP I may assign weight to that fact. Warhead tho appears to be a stickler because they host lists and do not want to be accused of third party manipulation of their handled lists they are very strict. Now do you get the same effect with a sciantastic message to warhead? Will they allow one list to get sent to another without reverse dns? Curious.
In another note I suspect that within 2 years all mail which fails reverse dns will be dropped on the floor. Best practice documents like

section 11 pertains to you.

Now that's something I needed to know.
Two years, you say? Well - that should give me a little time, anyway. In the meantime I still have the option of using Speakeasy's server, should I be forced to.
As to warhead, I never even thought of sending Scientastic there; geez - I think I'd get CRUCIFIED for spamming the list... Especially if Ranger Bill started critiquing the articles, when nobody here had ever heard of him...
Besides, if everybody started reading Scientastic, I'd have nothing to post in the Science forum on slow days!

if everyone used dkim signed mail does the list replace the original sig with its own? Add a new sig? Can list software be dkim aware at all? How does an dkim aware mta handle a list. All questions waiting to be answered.

AOL, Yahoo etc... are all flexing muscle right now in the "spam being rejected" arena.
AOL, used to blindly reject Known Dynamic Addresses. Now I believe the are rating SPAM, using the feedback methods built into the AOL mail stuff.
Yahoo, use public and private info to mark stuff as spam.
Me, I use Spamassassin with DCC, Pyzor, RulesDuJour and clamav. I am changing to doing the scanning at smtp time very soon. Right now I have it looping it around through the checking gauntlet before re-submitting to route properly.
