"Imagine" by John Lennon
was sung today at the opening ceremony of XX Olympic games...
When I heard "Nothing to kill or die for" - I realized that Lennon, like many great poets, did not necessarily know what he was writing. The phrase has two possible meaning: either everybody becomes friends, or there really is nothing important in the world, just emptiness, nothing worth fighting for. Guess which one has come to pass...

Guten Tag, Arkadiy,
I think that its pretty obvious which one Lennon was going for in the entire context of his "dream". After his dream was reached, then perhaps your second nihilistic assessment would happen... but then we would have to move this to religion/metaphysic forum. FWIW, Lennon was a fan of Gogol and Lermontov. At about this time in his career he was reading "Fathers and Sons" (saw a photo of him with book in hand).

I was just saying that the language uses its poets in a strange ways, sometimes. Without the poets being aware of it.

As Jos. Campbell replied to Moyers,
quite near the end of that remarkable series of (PBS) conversations, on myth:
... People die every day - for a metaphor.
And if the measure of a Great poet is ~ how many 'entendres' may be generated by some utterance? - who amongst us shall presume next to enumerate those which Lennon surely "failed to discern?" (besides you, that is.)
