Yeah, Gibson (or its proxies) has a history of that.
Remember Photon? A very cool guitar to MIDI conversion company that used light to do frequency conversion. They had the first (and probably still the only) frequency conversion technology that could properly track bass, being able to convert it in no more than a half-cycle, and do it accurately.
Gibson (or actaully Norlin) basically bought it, then killed it.
And don't get me started about Moog....
