Gore's speech today
[link|http://www.commondreams.org/views06/0116-34.htm|Common Dreams] Congressman Barr and I have disagreed many times over the years, but we have joined together today with thousands of our fellow citizens-Democrats and Republicans alike-to express our shared concern that America's Constitution is in grave danger.
In spite of our differences over ideology and politics, we are in strong agreement that the American values we hold most dear have been placed at serious risk by the unprecedented claims of the Administration to a truly breathtaking expansion of executive power. He doesn't quite use the I word, but that is what the speech is calling for. He is calling for a full investigation of behavior that the White House has more or less admitted was against the law. And taking whatever steps are needed to reign in the over reaching power of the President. Gore is a pretty well connected guy, and I suspect he is acting as a voice for a lot of the Democratic organization here. The DNC and DLC seem to be falling into their typical cowardly chicken and egg trap. The elected Democratic officals don't want to get behind impeachment until it has broad public support. But it won't get public support because the press are not covering it much becuase no elected officals are talking about it. Jay

Gore beats the drums for the Dems
cause he's pretty much untouchable at the moment (he's not running for office). (Look at what they're doing to Murtha and all he's asking for is to get the troops out of Iraq.)
I don't expect much from this (and I doubt Gore expects much). We probably WON'T see an impeachment. We probably WON'T see an independent investigator (although, given the current bribery scandel in the Senate, we SHOULD have one).
We MIGHT get a bigger turnout for the 06 elections, however.

I don't expect to see one now either
As much as I am sure that Bush deserves to be impeached, the votes are not there. As long as the Republicans control both houses of Congress, nothing will happen. The Republicans in Congress are already facing multiple major scandels, an increasingly unpopular war and a President with sagging ratings. Short of major riots in multiple cities, they are not going to let impeachment even be talked about in Congress.
This may change after the 2006 election though, depending on how much the Democrats pick up or fail to pickup. If the Democrats can get either house they may be able to convince enough moderate Republicans to get a full investigation or even impeachment hearings. And the blatency of the illegal actions is such that if an investigation is opened, it just becomes a question of who takes the fall.

Lincoln and other wartime presidents did as much
and were vilified for it properly after their administration ended. Chicago under martial law in 1864 and complaining about confederate prisoner mistreatment resulted in arrest and imprisonment without trial. That is if we are allowed to have a 2008 election. thanx, bill

No, I got cher point. You didn't get mine.
It was a little off, but could easily be argued that since we were talking about real threats, it could be included.
My response was what I say every time some one describes "the myth of global warming" to me. Hurricanes love hot water. ;0)

It's pretty good.
I'm surprised that he gave it as well as he did. He gave it better than it read to me.
It's [link|http://www.c-span.org/videoarchives.asp?CatCodePairs=Current_Event,Terr&ArchiveDays=365|here ] on C-SPAN - click on "Fmr. Vice Pres. Gore Speech on Executive Powers" to see the Real video. It's an hour and 5 minutes.
Cheers, Scott.

Watched it last night.
My 15 year old said, "That's Gore?" I said, "Yes, it is. That's the real Gore. Not the one the idiotic DLC concocted in 2000 with their idiotic political consultants." She said, "Why doesn't he run this time?" A damned good question imo. Gore is the lone candidate I can see that I could vote for without holding my nose.
