Damn you, Angband!
I normally don't play computer games. And this one is about as old-school as you can get - plain ASCII. It is also addictive as hell, in a manner familiar to anyone who has played nethack, rogue, moira, or any other of the rogue-like games.
Recommended only for those with too much spare time.
Cheers, Ben

Yep.
Currently running a L50 High-elf Ranger, who is hovering around level 50, trying to complete a set of resistances so he can dive further. This one feels like The One... He's got a speed of +37 after Haste Self - found a crossbow that gives +10 speed. Cubragol, or something like that. Admittedly, it makes fights a bit easy...

Gotta beat Angband first.
'Sides, I can't quite get the hang of the magic system in Z.

Give props where props is due
You didn't think that I could let this thread pass without commenting, did you?
I mean, a guy who goes on the 'net by (variously) Rodney and/or Yendor?
Originally got my start into serious long-term computer gaming with the granddaddy of 'em all in this genre, Rogue. After a couple years of hard-core playing of that (circa 1986), Moria was the new norm. I wasted entirely too much of my young life on that game -- but it also helped propel me into my current job.
Along with kobo-deluxe, Moria seriously helped pass many a dull evening spent in Friedrichsdorf, Germany. I think I still have the savefile from that character -- L47 mage, as I recall. About the only thing (aside from the Balrog) that he's scared of is the various [link|http://www.acronymfinder.com/af-query.asp?String=exact&Acronym=AMHD&Find=Find|AMHD]'s running around.

Isn't 40 the max level in Moria?

Is it?
It's been a couple years since I've played the character, though I'm sure I've got that savefile sitting around on a hard drive somewhere. I thought 50 was tops when I was writing the post. Could be wrong, but not that concerned either way...

What's "Yendor" got to do with Moria?
Apart from nothing?
ITYM "Nethack".

Moria came from Rogue...
...and Moria's concept started with Rogue. Concept of the game is to get the Amulet of Yendor by killing the Balrog.

Nope, no amulet in Moria.
The Amulet of Yendor is a Nethack thing.
You win at Moria by killing the Balrog and returning to the surface.
