I am finding a pocket of nifty breweries local to Portland/Seattle area as well. While the US was a complete beer wasteland in the 1980's, in the '90s we've caught up with the great beer countries of europe in some regions. Denver and Seattle are two of the major epicenters in the great beer reform in the US.
