The way Peter (and often others) goes on about "consultants", one gets the impression he's talking about *management* consultants. Maybe they only *call* us "consultants", while we actually *are* what you guys call "contractors"?

Anyway, I've never seen anybody *called* "contractor" in the Finnish or Swedish IT labour markets... The way I've seen the word used before -- pretty much everywhere *except* in discussions like this -- I thought a contractor was (traditionally) the guy who built your house for you (and more recently, a mercenary in Iraq).

New Same name for different jobs
Consultant - one who is not a full time employee. Is brought in because inhouse people are either not trusted, don't have the required skillset, or are out of time. Can be management, architect, designer, or actual coder.

Contracter - Same damn thing EXCEPT is usually not management.

It is generally expected that consultants are more likely to take an active role in defining their task, while contractors are more likely to be doing a task that someone else has already laid out for them.

Of course the line between these two is vague. And any resulting expectations are often violated in both directions.

But that's why contracters are usually not management. It is assumed that management has a role in figuring out what needs to be done, which means that it isn't a contract position.
