New Good call.
I was just being snarky on a whim.
New But actually not that far off.
Roche didn't develop Tamiflu, they just bought the rights to it from Gilead Sciences. Before joining the Bush administration, the CEO of Gilead was Donald Rumsfeld, and he still owns a major share of the company.

Gilead is now arguing with Roche over control of Tamiflu. When Gilead made the deal Roche, Tamiflu was considered a second rate treatment for some types of flu, but now it appears to be a potential major profit source.

New Avian Flu may kill 1.9 M in US, hospitalize 9.9 M.
Does this strike anyone else as gross fear-mongering? [link|http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=10000087&sid=au2P8NkcH8hI&refer=top_world_news|Bloomberg]:

Nov. 2 (Bloomberg) -- A U.S. outbreak of avian flu may kill as many as 1.9 million people and hospitalize 9.9 million, according to estimates in a new U.S. plan released today to protect Americans against a pandemic.

Medical personnel and workers in drug manufacturing plants should receive vaccines first under the plan fleshed out by Health and Human Services Secretary Michael Leavitt. President George W. Bush yesterday proposed spending $7.1 billion on vaccines and drugs, medical research and training for public health officials worldwide. More than 90 percent of the money would go to Leavitt's department.

``We're in a race against nature,'' said Harvey Fineberg, president of the Institute of Medicine, a U.S. government advisory group. If a bird flu outbreak did occur, ``we would all be in jeopardy, and it is possible that millions of people would die,'' Fineberg said in an interview today.

Bush proposed spending as much as $1.5 billion for the government to buy and stockpile enough vaccine for 20 million people; $1 billion for stockpiling anti-viral drugs to reduce the flu's severity; $130 million to help drugmakers prepare for increased production capacity; $2.8 billion to develop news ways to manufacture vaccines; and $583 million to help state and local governments prepare response plans.

I don't know where those 1.9 M/9.9 M numbers came from. They're not in the [link|http://www.whitehouse.gov/homeland/nspi.pdf|National Strategy for Pandemic Influenza] (17 page .pdf) released yesterday.

Flu is serious, and the potential of a human variant of H5N1 is very serious. But saying 1.9 M US people may die from a disease that has thus far killed 62 people worldwide ([link|http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercurynews/living/health/13060398.htm|40+ in Vietnam]) seems to me to be fearmongering. Especially since the money Bush's requested only would vaccinate 20 M people.

In short, if millions may die and 10 M be hospitalized, then a few hundred million should be vaccinated. Otherwise, it looks like political hype.

My $0.02.

Cheers,
Scott.

it depends on which Dictionary you use.

[link|http://dictionary.reference.com/search?r=2&q=Visqueen|www.dictionary.com] has one answer.... [link|http://www.doubletongued.org/index.php/dictionary/visquene/|Double Tongue Word Wrestler] dictionary has another.

New Look for widespread quarantines of 'blue states'
late October, 2008. People will not be allowed to leave thier homes.

And I'm only 1/2 kidding about that.

Remember, we're talking about a crew that floated the idea of postponing elections based on a 'threat level' of thier own devising.

New tend to agree, the conditions of life here will
allow dispersion vectors only if the disease isnt too virilent. The same reason we dont have ebola outbreaks is that the vector kills too many too quickly. I would see a smaller number of deaths, hospitalized and a boatload of very sick people. The Spanish flu 1918 killed many because of overcrowding, poor sanitation and poor understanding of epedemics.
thanx,

New What vaccine?
There is no vaccine available now against the avian flu strains doing the rounds. Anything now available was aimed at the regular human flu season and is utterly useless against these variants.
New You're looking too closely behind the curtain...
New But they aren't planning for that --
The fear is in the (whatever %likelihood) of a mutated strain capable of airborne infection. It seems that the boffins believe such a mutation is likely - only no way to estimate how quickly. Kinda like the state-of-art in volcano eruption predicting (?)

As suggested above - with this Admin, 'quarantine' possibilities are limitless, with True Believers.

Oh well; if there Is karma..
