Been sick and depressed and defeated
I've been fighting another sinus infection/bronchitis. I havent even paid off the sinus surgery from last spring and I'm sick again. That surgery bought me only 5 months of health and I'm back to square one. It's horribly depressing. I've spent the last week dragging my ass around until bedtime. I'm exhausted.
Still no job. I had my 3rd interview at U of M last week. It went very well and I hope to get an offer this week. Fingers are crossed.
Still dealing with the ex, my attorney, the courts, medicaid, the unemployment commission and numerous other government agencies who deem it necessary to interfer in my life at the moment. I wish they would all go away and leave me alone.
And in the middle of all this I decided to upgrade from Windows ME to XP. (Please no comments from the peanut gallery about Windows. It sucks. I know. ). Now I cant get Firefox, Norton Antivirus or my digital camera software to work and I dont have the fortitude to dink around with it.
I'm having a hell of a time. >:-(

XP sucks.
Luckily, it sucks less than ME ever did, so you actually are about 50% of the way to an upgrade - next stop, Ubuntu!

Keep your chin up.
You'll get through the sinus stuff and be yourself again soon.
Good news on the interview! Try not to put an expectation on the date. It sounds like it'll happen, but at a pace that only they understand. It's hard for me to type with all my digits crossed for you. :-)
Hey, look at the bright side: at least Immigration isn't after you too!
When you feel up to it, post some more details in the Windows X.X forum about your difficulties and we'll try to help. With enough dinking around with it Windows can usually be made to cooperate.

I got everything up and running
I hate how XP looks so I had to go back and change it to look like classic windows. I also updated all my Office products. Eh. I'm not impressed, except in Outlook when I get a new message a small pop up window shows for a few seconds with the sender's name and subject line, and then it fades away. I kinda like that. I dont feel so compelled to check the inbox as soon as I get a new message so it helps me stay focused on the task at hand. Otherwise,I'm not thrilled.

If you have broadband
you might want to consider [link|http://www.mepis.org/node/1462|downloading Mepis]; it's got really good hardware detection for compatability, and may well allow you to do everything you want while you struggle with the Windows install. It's a live CD; you don't have to install it to use it - so you won't get THAT headache, anyway.
Other than that, feel better, and I wish you success in tilting at the government windmills.

Would the position be tied to a semester break?
Knowing you wouldn't start until January would suck, but for that to be the case and not know it would be worse. I hope it's not the latter. Good luck.

Well, the interview sounds like good news!
But, crossing fingers for the U of M follow through.
Hey, my (as differentiated to my wife's machine or the shared laptop) one Windows machine is WinME. Fortunately, with Andrew Grygus's help, it is reasonably well behaved now. There will be no Windows upgrades in its future. Upgrades only encourage Microsoft to stay in business.
On your machine, use IE to [link|http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/|download Firefox] and then re-install it. You will want version 1.0.7 anyway.
Sorry about the sinus problems. Apparently, there's more to your condition than was understood.

Misery loves company
I wonder if there isn't some stealth bio-weapon being used on our fair nation. It seems like the feces has hit the rotating cooling device in many sectors. Coincidence? Hmmm. All I know is I'm feeling like shit too and our lives are a mess at the moment.
Parallel adversity sux.
All I know is, we are all in this together. You hurt, we hurt, etc. Since I believe that our collective positive thoughts are a powerful force in this universe, I have the utmost conviction that all the above flying debris will not only end quickly, but will somehow bring goodness to our currently shitty lives.
Just remember that we care. When all else fails, we have each other and that carries us to a higher place. I hope it helps you transcend all the crap happening in your life. My wish for you is victory over your foes, abundance for all your needs, and peace to soothe your soul.
Peace and love, Amy

I'm feeling somewhat better
Thanks.
Went back to doc. He scoped my sinuses in his office and cut out some scar tissue that was already starting to form. He could be bothered to use any kind of anesthesia. Man, that hurt. I was sent home with some antibiotics, steroids and vicodin- The usual cocktail. I'm starting to feel more like myself.
I had to get my kids on that Medicaid Health plan, which is fine because at least they have coverage until I secure a job. But now that I'm "in the system" I have a "case number", which has brought me multiple mailings from the "Family Independence Agency", with applications for food stamps, housing, clothes, etc. It's humiliating and degrading. I want to write them back and tell them I dont need their damn food stamps and HUD housing. I have the skills and experience to run their damn program- hire me and I'll prove it! But in the eyes of the state of Michigan I am one of the indigent. I dont like that one bit.
My mantra these days is "It's all good". Its all good Its all good Its all good Its all good Its all good.....

The Docrtine of Dynamic Pessimism.
- The way of the optimist leads perpetually to disappointment.
- Expect the worst that can possibly happen. At worst you will be prepared for what you get. Most of the time you will be delightfully surprised at being wrong.
- If things turn out worse than you expected, that is a failure in your imagination. Perhaps you are just not cut out for pessimism.

Conversely...
Two kids were put in separate rooms. The Optimist was put in a room filled with horse manure. The Pessimist was placed in a room full of toys. The Optimist was observed cleaning up his room and stacking the manure in neat piles. The Pessimist just sat forelornly in his room full of toys.
When asked what he was doing, the Optimist replied, "There has to be a pony in here somewhere!"
This phrase has gotten me through many crappy situations. (pun intended)

That's just a regular pessimist.
The Dynamic Pessimist, having already discounted the punishment, will go ahead and break toys to his heart's contnent.
The optimist, on the other hand, will, as always, be disappointed. Shoveled all that shit and still no pony.
