Same thing almost happened to me ~2 years ago
While checking out the route for the first HOPE Ride, I was on a paved hiking/biking trail. I was starting my descent down a hill that led to a curve at the bottom of the hill. I noticed a couple had just come around the curve on my way down the hill. Being a heavy person, I pick up speed going downhill. Knowing that I couldn't even cut it close to the oncoming lane with that couple there, I chose to completely miss my turn, went straight off the path (I clipped out beforehand, thankfully), and let the bike go while I ran forward, stopping my momentum. Completely tacoed my rear tire. Needed 3 hard whacks on the ground to get it to some semblance of "rideable", and rode another few miles to the nearest bike shop, where an emergency tire-ectomy was performed.
