New FEMA sends evacuees to "wrong" Charleston
Add geography to the growing list of FEMA fumbles.

A South Carolina health official said his colleagues scrambled Tuesday when FEMA gave only a half-hour notice to prepare for the arrival of a plane carrying as many as 180 evacuees to Charleston.

But the plane, instead, landed in Charleston, West Virginia, 400 miles away.

It was not known whether arrangements have been made to care for the evacuees or transport them to the correct destination.

A call seeking comment from FEMA was not immediately returned.

I'd say we need a house cleaning.

New I hear that
We're still waiting for evacuees to arrive in St. Louis. They've fixed up the old jail in Chesterfield for some of them, and established other areas at the airport here and at Mid-America Airport. (Edit: I corrected the name of the airport). Yet no one has arrived and now they said on the news it might be tomorrow. What on earth is going on, doesn't FEMA know what they are doing down there?

(Shaking my head).

Update: They just said on the news a plane of evacuees will be arriving at Mid-America Airport tonight in less than a half hour.

Today's relocation of about 4,000 evacuees from the Astrodome and Houston's other giant shelters to two Galveston-based cruise ships has been delayed because shelter residents don't want to go. Volunteers trying to fill buses bound for Kentucky also found few takers.

"Some of these people are still looking for their families," said Andrew Biar, a spokesman for the Federal Emergency Management Agency. "They don't want to go. They feel safe here."

"The dome is home for them," said Lt. Joe Leonard of the U.S. Coast Guard and area commander for the Houston shelters. "For residents, another immediate relocation is simply too much, too soon."

Some residents prefer to focus on finding family members while others want more time to explore options for getting on with their lives. All are struggling to comprehend the dramatic changes that have happened to them in less than a week.
