So, how important is a tailpipe
and is it really that big of a deal if it falls off?

Depends.
Did it fall off with the rest of the exhaust? :-)
Cops might care. If the break is after the muffler, the only thing you have to worry about is exhaust coming into the cabin while idling.

Broke off after the muffler
About a foot of pipe. It's a little louder, but if I turn the radio way up I dont notice it at all ;-).
Guess I'll drive with the windows down until I get it fixed.

Depending on how loud, be careful of noise ordinances.

It can affect efficiency a bit.
The muffler is probably designed to take advantage of gas momentum in the tailpipe, but the effect (except for sound) should be slight.

get thee to the autopartshaus
after measuring what is left for diameter, get a nifty looking extension and 2 muffler clamps to put on the part that broke. It will look spiffy if you like that fast and furious look. It will be cheap and will place fumes outside the car frame.
