Summary:
Windows Vista is XP, with a couple of new trinkets. Everything we said we were going to put into it is either going to be delayed until the next version, or will be backported to XP as well. :P

That is *so* getting renamed
It sounds like a household cleaner at the moment. Or worse.

Windows the features are in the Vista Edition
I can see the advertisement already.
Some guy puts a Windows CD in his computer and it lights up and installs instantly. His screeen is filled with features and abilites that he never had before. And then the features decend into the background of his screen, moving away from him. One by one they move out of reach of his mouse.
'Windows Vista, showing you the features you will get in the next version of Windows, we mean it this time.'

Would anybody notice that...
"Windows VE" (Vista Edition) is but one letter away from "Windows VD"?

Re: Windows Vista (codename Longhorn) announced
Hmmmm.....
1) Longhorn has been changed to Vista. 2) Vista means 'view'. 3) It's still a long way off, so we wouldn't be out of line calling it 'Long View'. 4) 'Long View' is a song by the band Green Day. 5) Green Day released an album called 'Dookie'. 6) "Dookie" is another word for "crap".
Eureka! Windows is crap!
Now I just have to work in Kevin Bacon somehow...

John C. Dvorak agrees
[link|http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1895,1840479,00.asp| \t\nWindows Vista: Where's the Buzz?] As readers know, Microsoft has announced the name of its new operating system, which was followed by a collective yawn from the computing community. Vista? As in "Hasta la Vista, baby?" That name might be appropriate as a symbolic goodbye since it might be the end of the line for Microsoft's dominance in the OS business. ... Right now, and as much as x86 users do not want to admit it, the Mac OS is already better than Windows in its modern look and feel as well as its functionality. I see too many smart people with Mac laptops nowadays.

Less of an issue than it seems.
I thought I'd hate it, but I don't really notice the lack of a 2nd mouse button.
Not to mention, if you buy a Mini you can just provide your own keyboard and mouse. You're stuck with a notebook, obviously, but like I said it's not that big of a deal.

With a notebook, just plug in a USB mouse. E.g. Kensington.

Yes, you can always do that.
And I do, since I can't stand trackpads. Some people, however, don't want anything external on their notebooks.

John C. Dvorak agrees (as if that matters)
regardless of OS partisanship, I have read this too many times to even begin to consider the truth of the claim I read discussions of how Win 95 was not a true 32 bit OS and how this would spell doom for MS in the long run how Win 98 was nothing new and 98SE wasn't even worth discussing how W2K would never catch on how ME sucked (it did but sold anyway) how XP was missing too many promised features to save MS
etc etc etc
from at least Win 3.1 to now the Mac OS (whichever one) has had proclaimed (or alleged) superiority
let's not forget Netscape who was going to make Windows nothing but a seldom used icon in the corner of the Java-based desktop
or Sun and the network computer
or desktop Linux

it doesn't
that was just a way to lead into his article. until the numbers are in, the rest is just wishful thinking (at best) numbers such as [link|http://www.thechannelinsider.com/article2/0,1895,1837843,00.asp|\nApple Earnings Show Rising Mac Sales]? sales of Macintosh computers have risen 35 percent over the year-ago quarter, which gave the Apple products triple the sales rate of other computer vendors.
"To me, there were two standout numbers" in Apple's results, said Charles Wolf, a New York-based analyst at Needham & Co. LLC. (Wolf owns shares of Apple stock.) "Clearly, the iPod shipment number was an upside surprise from the consensus estimate," he said, but added that "more significant were the Mac shipping numbers." ... He said he did not know whether the sales increase arose from the so-called "halo" effect from Windows users buying iPods and then buying Macs, or from people moving to the Mac platform due to rising concern over viruses and spyware.
Either way, however, Wolf said, the numbers "would suggest that there are many Windows users switching." I've seen a number of people switch, most recently my boss who's been very pro Microsoft.

Y'know what keeps (some of us) Down on the Farm?
[Well, root-cause == laziness of the mental kind re all \ufffd-stuff, natch - at least in my case]
Friend just dropped off the e-machine box I had set up for her in '02. Carrying her Powerbook {envy}. She had gotten some use out of it 'til the inevitable Oops [re Real Player IIRC - foolishly d/ling an "Up"grade for no bloody good reason]. She had gotten that use, I believe 'cause it came to her dejunked, 98SE-lite, with a few Caveats listed for her, etc.
Now it's sitting on the floor. It's a mere 500-PIII (but then, mine's a mere 600 of same series). Could be full backup por moi; just sneakernet a CD with data now and then... What could be easier to "extend the day of reckoning == ackshully get Apple #1"?
Somehow though.. this time I'm not moved to even look at the sucker. Let it sit in a corner. Maybe someone I-don't-like will 'need' a cheap-shit box.
There's No Joy to be had in configuring ANY Beastware box (not ameliorated by that tiny-pleasure of being able to ~dejunk it somewhat). It's become -por moi- precisely as You Say,
We don't do Windows, it's too much of a chore
