cmd.exe replacement for Windows?
Basically, I'm looking for two things:
1. Replacement for cmd.com that works more like a Linux shell window 2. bash for Windows. Cygwin does this pretty well already; the only reason I mention it is I hopefully could use #2 at the same time as #1.
Oh, and it's gotta be free. :P

Monash shell.
You'll need to be on the beta program.
And there's no good terminal emulators for Windows (that I'm aware of) that don't involve silly shit like telnetting to your own computer. You could use PuTTY if you wanted to do that.

Not sure I understand...what's wrong with Cygwin bash?

Re: Not sure I understand...what's wrong with Cygwin bash?
If I'm reading it right, he wants to replace the crappy terminal application that bash and CMD.EXE run in.

Or OS X, etc.
But that wasn't the question :-)

Holdover until I *can* expunge Windows from this machine.
I'm down to one app - TrackIt. Unfortunately, there's institutional momentum behind this app, working on alternatives.

Are you using the Web front-end?
We also use Track-it for our internal trouble tickets. Initially the Web version was Win + IE only but they upgraded several months ago and now it runs on just about anything.
So far, tested on Linux/Firefox, OSX/Safari, OSX/Firefox.
Okay, not a definitive set of tests but it hits the platforms I actually use at work, which was my biggest complaint.

I'll have to try it.
I know the 'end user' front end works with anything; it's the technician front end that I'm worried about.

Requires ActiveX
Been there, done that.
As long as you're using TrackIT!, you'll not be able to ditch Windows.

Latest one doesn't
Yes, the original one did require ActiveX, but the version we're using seems to work fine in every browser I've used so far.
In fact, I was so pleasantly surprised I sent a complimentary e-mail to our I.T. guy, who usually installs stuff to make us *less* productive.

Just tried it.
We're using 6.5. Trying to visit the page fails horribly; the technician client is basically one giant ActiveX control, as Peter said. The end user page is, however, compatible with any web browser out there.
Now trying some alternatives.

Think that's the old one
I just logged into our Track-It (OS X/Safari) and can't find the version number.
But it worked fine.
Oh, well, we tried.

Are you able to edit tickets?
I don't mean just the ones you created; I'm talking about ones assigned to you.

Re: Are you able to edit tickets?
I don't get them assigned to me. I'm just an end-user.
Maybe that's the difference. However, I do remember on the older version, the login screen wouldn't even show up unless you were running IE + Windows.

Yeah, that's the difference.
Track-It has two clients, one for the end user, and one for the technicians. 6.5 was where they introduced the browser-agnostic user page; but the technician page is still basically one big ActiveX control that contains the entire application. :P
