Decisions, decisions, decisions
I just got approval for my employer to send me to [link|http://conferences.oreillynet.com/os2005/|OSCON]. However there is also an awesome company party scheduled for Aug 4, right in the middle of the conference. Which do I choose?
Making more open source connections?
Or getting to know co-workers better with lots of free alcohol?
Cheers, Ben

You forget: They don't have any beer over there.

Au Contraire
It's hard to find and unfeasibly expensive and it's served warm, but yes, they do have Beer.

Think about rarity
The opportunity to meet open source developers only occurs once per year whereas you can meet your colleagues most of the time, even if it's in the pub after work at your expense. Don't let a rare opportunity pass you by.
Matthew Greet
Choose Life. Choose a job. Choose a career. Choose a family. Choose a fucking big television, choose washing machines, cars, compact disc players and electrical tin openers. Choose good health, low cholesterol, and dental insurance. Choose fixed interest mortgage repayments. Choose a starter home. Choose your friends. Choose leisurewear and matching luggage. Choose DIY and wondering who the fuck you are on a Sunday morning. Choose sitting on that couch watching mind-numbing, spirit-crushing game shows, stuffing fucking junk food into your mouth. Choose rotting away at the end of it all, pishing your last in a miserable home, nothing more than an embarrassment to the selfish, fucked up brats you spawned to replace yourself. Choose your future. Choose life... But why would I want to do a thing like that? I chose not to choose life. I chose somethin' else. And the reasons? There are no reasons. Who needs reasons when you've got heroin? - Mark Renton, Trainspotting.

Probably next year?
It's a perk of being a valued employee at a large company.
Of course if I had the energy to put together a presentation, I have very good reason to believe that I could present and go for free. But I don't so I won't.

Which are you liable to regret less the next morning?
I'd go with the conference. There'll be some neat Ruby talks.

But I don't plan on doing many Ruby talks. There are just too many interesting Perl ones. :-)

Just kidding there, fellow eBay shareholder. It's really good to see a company invest in its people.
And thanks for your contribution to eBay's Q2 53% earnings improvement!

Actually I'm not a shareholder (yet)
I have options. I'm in a program that will get me shares in a few more months. But I don't currently have shares.
However the thought is appreciated, and you're welcome. (Though my contribution was fairly insignificant.)
