New Re: Freedom Commission on Mental Health?
Why isn't such blatant attempts at patriotic button pushing laughed at?

Shouldn't that be 'aren't such...' ?

And, who says they're not?

New No longer newsworthy?
I knew certain, high profile laws were given patriotic, button pushings names, the Patriot Act being the prime example, but I'm surprised it's used everywhere. So, such language abuse is so common, no one bothers to report it. So, the president is no longer an abuser of patriotism but a source of amusement and outrage.

The British, of course, reserve this role for the royal family. I better understand US culture, now.

Choose Life. Choose a job. Choose a career. Choose a family. Choose a fucking big television, choose washing machines, cars, compact disc players and electrical tin openers. Choose good health, low cholesterol, and dental insurance. Choose fixed interest mortgage repayments. Choose a starter home. Choose your friends. Choose leisurewear and matching luggage. Choose DIY and wondering who the fuck you are on a Sunday morning. Choose sitting on that couch watching mind-numbing, spirit-crushing game shows, stuffing fucking junk food into your mouth. Choose rotting away at the end of it all, pishing your last in a miserable home, nothing more than an embarrassment to the selfish, fucked up brats you spawned to replace yourself. Choose your future. Choose life... But why would I want to do a thing like that? I chose not to choose life. I chose somethin' else. And the reasons? There are no reasons. Who needs reasons when you've got heroin?
- Mark Renton, Trainspotting.
New It's the USA PATRIOT Act.
It's worse than you surmise. [link|http://www.epic.org/privacy/terrorism/hr3162.html|HR 3162]:

SECTION 1. SHORT TITLE AND TABLE OF CONTENTS.

(a) SHORT TITLE- This Act may be cited as the `Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism (USA PATRIOT ACT) Act of 2001'.
(b) TABLE OF CONTENTS- The table of contents for this Act is as follows:

:-/

As many have noticed recently, the names of proposed legislation often is often diametrically opposed to its effects (e.g. [link|http://news.ft.com/cms/s/7ccaf32c-edbb-11d9-9ff5-00000e2511c8.html|CAFTA and screaming by Florida sugar plantation owners]. CAFTA is a free-trade agreement, but under it sugar imports to the US would still be limited.). As you note, Congressmen also try to name legislation in such a way that it appears that you side with the flag burners and pie smashers if you oppose it. The USA PATRIOT Act is only the latest example.

Scott.
