On bathing.
There are few finer solitary pleasures (that can be discussed in polite company) than a nice hot bath.
This, I find, is an experience that, regrettably, I too rarely have the time or inclination for; so when I do, I try to make the most of it.
A good hot bath is a joy that comes in multiple stages. Firstly, there's preparation; I like to procure clean clothes; a favourite t-shirt, a crisp pair of fresh jeans, and comfy undies. No point getting all clean just to get all dirty again straight away.
Draw the bath. No, CRC, put down your sketchbook. Water hot, as Bilbo once sang.
This is a time for anticipation and the thought of a wearisome day about to be soaked away. Round about now, I like to listen to some relaxing music (this part is helped by the fact that the hot tap in my bath is somewhat slow, so I get to hear all of Little Fluffy Clouds and Earth:Gaia from The Orb's Adventures Beyond The Ultraworld).
A good hot bath is, of course, too hot at first, so there's a bit of ow-dare I?-blimey-bloody-hell as one lowers one's precious things into it. A fleeting moment where one reaches just about the limit of one's tolerance melts away as the heat penetrates one's aching bones and there's the moment of *sigh*, where it's just you, a supply of hot water, and the view of the shower (fie, oh instrument of the splash'n'dash culture!). Tru]y, this is peace.
Now it's time to close the eyes and slip beneath the surface; back to the womb. A few moments of this and we are ready to get clean. Hair first; one simply cannot tolerate unwashed hair for long. Being blessed with a full head of hair (I work on the principle that I don't care if it's greying as long as I've got it) there is a satisfying transition from greasy mop to squeaky-clean coiffure.
One's body is lathered thoroughly; I've got some of the most remarkable stuff for this. It's claimed to be composed of tea tree and mint, and it has a remarkable cooling sensation; this hot/cold dichotomy lends the whole thing a yin/yang balance quality. Once more we descend beneath the waves.
Now that the business is attended to, we can turn our attention to pleasure. Of course, this involves a substantial amount of doing nothing at all, which is an activity that modern lifestyles regrettably preclude to an alarming degree.
A gentleman can take this opportunity to fit a new blade to his razor and have a shave; when one's whiskers have been soaked for a good 20 minutes, a fresh blade yields a deliciously close shave with only a little shaving soap or gel. Ladies may choose to do their legs at this juncture, with similar results. Except on their lower appendages, rather than their faces, of course.
When sufficient nothing has been accomplished, it's time to get out. A large white towel, dry as a bone and slightly rough, is the best thing ever at this point. Revived, a chap cleans his teeth (extra diligently, in my case; I have no desire to repeat the recent course of dental treatment) and gets dressed. The remainder of the evening is assuredly to be spent in a considerably more relaxed state than would have otherwise been the case. A good night's sleep is guaranteed.
Writing up the whole experience on the internet is optional.

Tea tree oil soap is the shizzit.
But I can't deal with a truly close shave. Makes me break out.

This is why I have a spa
and fortunately the new house has one too. Good for warming up the bones. I particularly enjoy sitting outside in a snowstorm in one.

Reading that makes me want to sink into a steamy hot tub
except it's 90 hot and sticky degrees so I have to wait til it cools down to enjoy. I have some rosemary and mint bath salt that is heaven in a bottle.
I'll take a bath over a shower any day :-)

On baths and hot days
When I first moved to Chicago, my apartment didn't have AC and all around me was concrete which simply beamed the heat back at the buildings.
One of my favorite things was to run a cold water bath, get a glass of iced tea, put on the stereo and just soak for about half an hour.
Not enough for hypothermia, but it made my body cool enough to sleep comfortably on those hot Chicago nights.

there is only one better sensation if you have access
to the facilities. The Hotel Captain Cook in Anchorage Alaska being the 5 star hotel that is is has a shaving bar. I used to work there. Day started at 9am I would arrive at 7:30. Jacuzzi tub first a nice 10 minute or so soak headphones on or watching a variety of news feeds. Afterwards drag ass covered only in towel (separate male/female facility) to the steam room where one might encounter the Governor, various congress critters in season and local pols for languished conversation. Best is when it is empty so the steam is outfitted to your requirements. After replacing those turgid fumes from last night in your lungs with fresh filtered steam on to the sauna a nice dry 180 degrees until every pore is dry then wet as poisons leave the system then dry again. From there to the shower, liquid refreshments and shampoos hanging from dispensers, each stall having multiple jets of high pressure water. From there to the shaving bar with multiple choice of lotions lather and aftershaves, then the turkish terry robes and towels and a fresh bagel juice and coffee in the deep leather furniture with all the available daily rags from local to NYC. After feeling ready to go step into the clean clothes you brought with you and trundle 40 feet to your cube ready to do some work. Gawd I really miss that. Failing that Peter's idea that a bath is a ritual to be observed as opposed to a quick scrub to knock the clarty bits off is the best. thanx, bill

On showers.
I'd agree with you if you replaced almost every instance of "soak", "bath", etc., with the corresponding words for a shower.
Sorry, baths just don't do much for me except make me feel dirty when I'm finished. They're fine for cooling off, briefly, on a hot summer night in an unairconditioned room, but not for getting clean. Perhaps I've always lived in areas with hard water, but in my experience one always ends up with a slimy film of soap scum, dead skin, etc., etc. after a bath. (Unless one is fortunate enough to have a tub with a shower hose and thus the ability to wash that stuff off with fresh water. Several places I lived when I was younger didn't have such conveniences.)
Hot tubs don't appeal to me either.
Give me a nice long shower over a bath any day.
Nice writeup though. :-)
Cheers, Scott.

Re: On showers.
Sorry, baths just don't do much for me except make me feel dirty when I'm finished. ... I agree. I have never been a "soaker" person, I just don't enjoy the tub much. Hot tubs don't appeal to me either. I do enjoy the hot tubs, but only when they have the massage feature. Too bad we don't have one. ;) Give me a nice long shower over a bath any day. Ditto here. And my shower is more than just getting clean. I have a really nice shower massage head in my shower, and it does wonders at relaxing me, massaging tired and aching muscles, and gets me clean at the same time. :) Plus you can build up steam in a shower area, (if it has glass doors), and that helps my allergy congestion as well!
