I was hoping to reuse the memory on the MB that I got from Alex (thanks again, BTW), but it appears that one of the slots cut into the bottom of the module doesn't line up with a standard DIMM socket. I could Dremel the slot on the module enough to make it fit and all the conacts do line up. Is this something I want to stay away from? The other choice would be to Dremel the teat on the socket. So, you need to know what those are on the socket and how they are on the DIMM. If you have an ECC modules that has a multiple of 9 memory chips on it AND you can cut away some of the tab so only signals from the ninth chips are disregarded then it could work. If you would toss the as is DIMMS if they don't work, then it could be worth a shot. Another factor besides fit is whether the DIMM is registered or not. In this case registered means has a register or buffer for the data. Some motherboards need registered DIMMs, yours does not. If your DIMMs are registered, you may have an incompatibility. I have had a mobo that did not need registered DIMMs have sporadic memory glitches with a registered DIMM. Go [link\|http://www.crucial.com/search/srchrslt.asp?type=All&ANDOR=AND&rowcount=20&cv=Crucial&keywords=ECC+128MB&submit=Go\|here] at Crucial and see what type of 128 MB ECC sticks you have. Note that one is 168 pin PC100 SDRAM 3.3v, the rest are 184 pin DDR 2.5-2.6V sticks, with a 200 pin SODIMM stick (likely for a laptop) thrown in for good measure. (You can also search by the Dell model if you know it.) [edit:]The Crucial link above only shows the 168 pin DIMM as being ECC, the rest are non-ECC. Note that the 168 pin DIMM has 2 notches while the 184 pin DIMM has only one (click on the part numbers to see pictures). Since the [link\|http://z.iwethey.org/forums/render/content/show?contentid=208997\|head post] mentions 2 notches, I suspect that he has 168 pin DIMMs and the motherboard wants 184 pins.[/edit] Trying to make the memory fit will cause problems. It's not offset more than a 1/16 of an inch. The other notch lines up perfectly and all the pins are exactly lined up as well. My thought was that knowing Dell's proclivity for doing little things to make their shit proprietary, this is simply an effort to stop you from using their memory in machines other than their own. Hey, it was worth asking anyway. I just hate thinking I'm stuck with memory I can't use. That leaves me with one PC100 128MB module to stick in this board. I can't remember just what the variations are but they could include voltages, buffering (i.e. registered) and speed. If they don't fit, they wouldn't work if they could.
