Welcome to IWETHEY!

New My journey is complete, it seems.
So yesterday my neighbour calls me over as I'm unpacking the shopping from the back of the car.

"Afternoon. Could I pick your brains for a minute, please, when you've done that?"

"Yeah, no problem." (nice neighbours, we get on well)

So I unpack the shopping and pop round next door. They've just bought a new wireless router, see (Belkin one; good choice) and they could see this other wireless network, and is it mine, and are they going to clash and so on?

I assure them that yes, it's my wireless network they can see, and they're not to do anything because I'll just configure mine to ensure no problems, and so on. You just set up yours as per the instructions, and I'll take steps at my end to keep out of your hair.

How neighbourly. How civilised. How smoky! Both of my esteemed neighbours were smoking a cig as we talked in their living room and I, despite my best manners, was desperate to leave; not because of my neighbours (nice) but because of the dense smoky fug through which we conducted our conversation.

Now, I don't for one moment begrudge anyone the right to have a nice ciggie in the comfort and privacy of their own home, but it's worth bearing in mind that at one point, I lived in that smoky fog.

And now I can't stand it.

I dub myself officially (and provisionally, of course) an Ex-Smoker.

New good job
Welcome to the club. :-)

I remember a conversation we had on jabber once a long time ago..you had started smoking again, and I was telling you about my wife quitting. You said "Naw, she's just temporarily not smoking."

Glad you've gotten past that thinking!

I know how that goes. I can smell cigarette smoke from quite a distance now. Sitting at a stop light, i can usually tell if someone in a car near me is smoking. Also, my mom still smokes..I hate when she comes over because even though we don't let her smoke in the house, she still brings the stench in on her clothes.

New Re: good job
That thinking (you're never really an ex-smoker, you're just temporarily not smoking) still persists; I once gave up for 18 months!

Hence the "provisionally" ;-)

And yes, I've got a nose for it now; I can tell if SWMBO had a smoke at lunchtime when she comes in from work five hours later.

New Ditto getting a nose for it.

Growing up with a stay-at-home mom who was (and still is) a 3-pack-a-day smoker, I never noticed it. Now when I go home for a few days I can smell the smoke as soon as I walk into the house, and have to immediately do a load of laundry when I get back, to get the smell off my clothes.

New Know exactly what you mean
Your mom sounds like my mom. I remember driving in the car as a kid with my shirt pulled over my nose while mom puffed away in the car. And she's still puffing away, between the hits of oxygen she needs for her emphysema and congestive heart failure. My Dad smoked, too, and didnt quit until he became a quad from the MS. Funny how that works.

Good for you for quitting, Peter! I never smoked, thanks to my parents. Call it aversion therapy. In college I would occassionally light one up to piss off my roommate, who had allergies worse than mine. Ahh, good times.
New good on ya mate :-)
sounds like you're doing fine.
Have fun,

New It's never over
I haven't smoked in about 17 years.
Before that, I was up to 3 packs a day.
I HATE being in a smoky room - makes me gasp, tough to breath, almost sick to my stomach.

And almost EVERY day, when I recoil in revulsion from someone smoking, I STILL want to light up.

I satisfy my craving 2 ways.

#1 - I smoke a cigar every few months. Drew Estates Earthiness - tastes like molasses.
#2 - I play dimes at the party, using cigarettes, and occasionally inhale.
New Re: It's never over
The craving doesn't happen for me. What I do get, usually after a couple of beers or a meal, is an abstract feeling of "a smoke would be good right now". Then, what usually happens is that someone lights up and the reality of the idea melts away as I realise what a stench it is.

Any chance you could bring one to the party? I'd like to give it a try.

Or are they available everywhere?
New Sure
I've got about 8 right now. By then I'll have 4 or so.

Or:
Earthiness
Unquestionably the fullest bodied cigar in the entire Acid line.
Earthiness finishes with a hint of white pepper.

New That's wonderful, Peter!
You should be really proud of yourself! I never smoked ever, but I know it's extremely hard to quit, based on other people's experiences.

BRAVO!

Brenda
