The Office - season 2
May be the best comedy ever. I don't think I laughed once, but it's great.
(Question to Peter: is British office really such a free place? I know all about American puritanism (and if I did not, we have people here to enligten me), but giving co-worker a dildo for birthday - it's a bit too robust for me. Is it normal over there?)

yes
We once presented a leaver with a chocolate willy, amongst other things. He was most amused.
From what I can gather, UK office workers enjoy an environment that is somewhat more relaxed than the one experienced by our orking brethren across the pond.

For good reason
That particular present if it offended someone could be grounds for a lawsuit here. Seriously.
I know that I've received friendly warnings along that line for far less provocative stuff.
Cheers, Ben

When I left my last job as a crisis therapist
I was given a dildo and some herbal supplement that increases libido. I, too, was most amused.

And there's the difference
The chocolate willy was nothing whatsoever to do with getting laid.
Different cultural mindset, see. Work to us is a necessary evil that we will alleviate in any way possible, usually by ritual moaning about it and by having a good laugh about it all the time - this often also takes the form of moaning and it takes a perceptive person to tell the difference between the two expressions of disdain at having to work.

Sounds like mental health to me.
As opposed to 'sublimating' the awful time-anchor, practicing.. imagining that the Work is rilly important and that.. You DO Like Being There (which is so clearly an aberration, probably with an official polysyllabic name, too).

Book choice:
"Watching The English", by Kate Fox.
It'll help you a lot in understanding why we are the way we are.

I'm not sure
Which came first?
The combination of bad food and good beer?
Or the attitude that without drink there is nothing to live for?
