Sigh. Will they *never* learn? Going, going, goner.
Will people NEVER learn to stop clicking on attachments?
The [link|http://www.infoworld.com/articles/hn/xml/01/12/04/011204hngoner.xml|Goner] worm.
This is actually one of the least sophisticated worms since Melissa, but it's spreading like wild. It's not one of these HTML-activated in the viewing window worms. It's a pure click-on-it worm.
(sigh.)

It only works if you middle-upside-down click it.

Spoken like a true M$ hack
"What's that? You say our program has defects? Well, we vehemently deny that, but, if you'll just fork over wads-o-cash and upgrade to our latest version, all your problems will go away. Really. We mean it this time. What's that? You say we promised that with each of the last 73 patches and upgrades and that was wrong? Well, we got it right this time, trust us."
Sorry Andread, your promises ring just a tad hollow given M$'s history.

Well Brian
I have received quite a few Goner virus messages at my office I am using Outlook XP When you click on the attachment, you get a message saying that the execution of a potentially dangerous attachment is blocked Thus the virus did not infect my computer You can argue about whether the new features in Outlook XP constitute overkill but they can hardly be called promises

You can do the same thing under Office 2k.
I don't remember right now, but there is an option (that you must tweak yourself) to prevent the execution of all scripts and executables.
The fact that this is even necessary does, to me, indicate a fundamental flaw in the system however.

not a new feature, available since day 1
they just made it the default behavior instead of a savvy user having to figure it out. Glad to see improvement. thanx, bill

It's going to take the bad guys almost a week
to figure out how to avoid tripping the XP danger check. The good guys, I trust, already know how but haven't done it yet.

There's more to it than that, actually...
It basically blocks out any executable content.
If somebody installed a scripting system on the computer that used a non-standard extension, then you might be able to sneak through that, but you wouldn't be guaranteed of catching most windows users.
