I have nearly always used:
A 16oz bottle of filtered water being slowly poured into the carb at about 2000RPM. Just enough to cause it to stumble, but not backfire or stall.
Then a quick shot of carb cleaner through the carb during running. I always put it in the bowl.
Then go check.
Nearly everytime... the steam works to reduce buildup on the piston, also causes the scraper rings to get a bit cleaner and causes the valves to change a bit.
If you kill your car, by just pouring the water in it. I take ZERO responsibility.
Too much and you could possibly get a hydraulic water jam in the combustion chamber, bending the crank, Connecting rod or damaging the piston.

EFI! Ahhh, nuther good one.
There are these cans you get at the corner auto parts store.
They are basically carb cleaner good enough to run on, but pressureized and made so you can run the car on them.
1-2 cans, if the Injection system is not clean yet... it is defective.
This also has a similar benefit, this also clean the oxygen sensor as the burning extends into the exhaust usually.
But, it is 02 sensor safe.
I have cleaned about 10 cars this way. Plus a complete spark tune-up kits == great.
