Why do I find this more offensive than man beef? Tripe? Almost as bad as cats a dogs. Have you guessed I'm vegetarian?

Tripe is just the Stomache Lining. Sheesh.
Before you go "grossing out" it doesn't taste like you'd expect.
Tripe in many place is considered very good food, due to the length of time for coooking (stew, soup or low heat roasting) and seasonings used and processing it gets.
I'll bet you'd like it if you weren't told what it was. Most tripe sold is Beef, but Pork and Sheep/Lamb tripe is claimed to be even more tasty.

Head cheese, Yes!
Love the stuff - wish it weren't so fattening. The version at my local store is made of big chunks so you can tell the ears from the snouts from the tongues and stuff.
Even the many years I was (mostly) vegetarian, processed pig parts were my major weakness.

Hey, silly vego-person, you keep...
..."vomiting" over our perfectly normal dietary habits, then we'll vomit (in your silly vego-person hair) over yours too, OK?
Or alternatively, you can stay away from this particular forum altogether, if perfectly normal dietary habits are too much for your silly vego-person "sensibilities".
Or, you *could* of course just shut up with that bullshit and participate in the discussion -- or not, as the case may be when it comes to meat (but then have the fucking nous to just STFU altogether on those threads) -- like a grown-up.
Your choice.

That crap is just disgusting. Sorry if you like to eat it, but that's my opinion (and hers too, apparently), and I'm allowed to voice it whether I'm vegetarian or not.
I suspect the number of people who enjoy head cheese is well into the minority.

Well, no, I'm being redundant there -- there's no "also" about it, since it is precisely *by* gibbering about "vomiting" over perfectly ordinary food that she -- and now you, welcome to the club -- are *being* arseholes.
Sure you are "allowed to voice your opinion" -- but if that is a *personally offensive* opinion that you're voicing, then I am just as fucking much allowed to call you on it and let you know that you're being offensive arseholes.

Right back atcha, baby.
AdminiScott is apparently adversely affected by the lack of air at the height of the horse he's got up on: When the hell did you develop such a thin skin? It's not so much about skin as about my thin stomach lining. I find vomit so yucky that I almost *do* it, just from people *talking about* it. But, more to the point, when I see that people are actively *trying* to offend me(*), then I *feel* offended by *that attempt in itself*. Calling stuff that's disgusting to me "disgusting" is somehow a personal affront to you?" Yeah, right, so you might say that "I find that disgusting"... But the phrase "Excuse me while I go vomit" -- *as opposed to* "I find that disgusting" -- isn't *intended* as a supercilious put-down at all, right? Bullshit. Pull the other one, while you're at it. You're the one making it personal when you start calling someone a "silly vego-person". Oh yeah? And what if it is my sincere OPINION that vegetarians are following a stupid diet, and at least to that extent ARE BEING silly? Oh, so everyone is allowed to have -- and express -- an "opinion"... EXCEPT me?!? Piss off. It's my opinion, feel free to ignore it, chump. Yeah, well, and it was *my* opinion that the bio-babe was being offensive to me, *first*... But THAT opinion doesn't count, eh? Then why the fuck should *you* be allowed to have *yours*, if I can't have mine??? And take your vitriolic bullshit to the flame quarantine, would you? SHE spewed HERS here, didn't she? And so did YOU, didn't you? So why the fuck didn't YOU redirect your part of the thread there, if that's where you think it belongs??? Sheesh. Indeed. To such double-standard hypocrisy, I can't find anything better to say either.
(*): Or, as in this case, just generally trying to be offensive, whether they know at the time that I will be among the targets or not.

Yup; I'm part of the group she was implicitly adressing.
Like, "You eat potatoes? Yuuuck, excuse me while I go projectile-vomit!!!" isn't directed at -- insulting to -- *anyone* who eats potatoes?
And WTF do you mean, I wasn't "part of the conversation"? I hadn't *said* anything up until my first post, but do you think the bio-chick and the Gryge were having a *private* conversation??? (YTF wouldn't they have taken it to e-mail, in that case?) It's a fucking *public* conversation, like they all are here.
No, I don't particularly think that "the world revolves around me"... On the contrary, if you want to make this about Americans and others, I was just "collateral damage" -- and as usual, the bloody Yanks can't even *see* that they're firing at just about everybody, even though we're standing up and shouting "Oi! Look where you're aiming that thing!"
So, OK, you're right: Bloody typical, in that respect.

You're being a sour kraut, quick to take offence
Christian, really. Get a grip on yourself.
She was expressing the fact that she didn't like head cheese. It is perfectly OK for her to not like head cheese. Just like it is OK for you to be unable to stomach fresh salad.
She didn't say that meat eaters are gross and shouldn't participate in a cooking forum. No offence was intended, and none should be taken. Particularly by bystanders who she didn't even know where present, let alone have any intention of addressing.
To follow up on your analogy, you've mistaken a sour raspberry for gunshots directed at your head. And opened return fire. Then you wonder why everyone thinks that you're overreacting.
In particular you not only indicated a negative impression of vegetarian food, but you told her that she shouldn't be in this forum. It is OK for you to dislike vegetarian food. (Though by your standards for you to say that insults everyone present who is vegetarian, and you shouldn't be doing it. For the record I happen to know that there are other vegetarians present, though I don't really want to drag them into it by naming names.) But it is not OK for you to arbitrarily start telling other people where they may or may not post. Who made you God around here?
While she didn't intend to offend (and I believe that you clearly shouldn't be taking offence), you clearly did intend to offend. Were I in your shoes, I'd be apologizing about now. Unfortunately your understanding of basic courtesy is so lacking that this option is unlikely to occur to you. But at least I'd hope that you could develop the common sense to realize that you're not exactly making friends right now, perhaps this is a good time to cease and desist.

Oh, we don't need to be so harsh - yet.
Many vegetarians try to convince themselves they're repulsed in hopes of staving off back-sliding just as reformed smokers do. We needn't mock them just because they're, well, weak.
On the other hand, I find it fascinating that a person who tells us she makes her living drawing and quartering small living beings (or formerly living, anyway) "vomits" at the thought of head cheese and tripe (1).Perhaps such a person should reconsider her career choices? What a delicious dilemma if she aspires to veganism!
On the other hand, this is the Internet where "nobody knows you're a dog", and we have yet no physical verification (not even pictures) so this dislocation could be the beginning of an unraveling, which would be a lot of fun in its own right.
------------
(1) Many years ago (before anyone knew about sushi) I sometimes patronized Yama's original sushi bar for lunch. One lunchtime a bunch of doctors from a local hospital (their consumption of creepy-crawlys is strictly between them and their rabbi) settled in. The whole lunch time they discussed various "interesting procedures" they'd recently performed on children.
As I was leaving, I told them it didn't upset me, but if there had been other patrons I'd have had to protest their subject matter. They explained it was a game they played to see just how much they could take and still enjoy a lunch of sliced raw and slimy critters.

On the Internet it's never rediculous . .
. . because false personalities abound, some very skillfully maintained over long periods of time.
You've been pretty consistent, so I certainly don't expect you to turn out other than what you say, I believe in applying the benefit of the doubt quite liberally in any case, but I wouldn't be shocked if you did.
As for making it a "big freakn deal", you've contributed your fair share, so there's no cause to get all huffy.
I would still find it a delicious set of rationalizations for a vegan to work opening up critters for scientific divination, but, alas, you haven't claimed to be one of those.
As I said, I spent time (about a decade) being a vegetarian, though not an "ethical" one nor pure (going out I'd eat what I was served regardless), but bein' a farm boy I wasn't about to be disgusted by what anyone else wanted to eat - I'd already seen it all and where it came from.

Heheh.
_I_ find head cheese disgusting (gaggingly repulsive, in fact) - and I butchered animals regularly as a kid without qualm. It was a part of farm life. I've had head cheese, too - my grandmother used to make it. The taste and the idea of it are BOTH repulsive, IMO. I can't account for other peoples' tastes - nor do I try.
I know people that think my taste for steak tartar to be disgusting and sickening, though they have no trouble gutting a trout or skinning an animal, for example.
Why, in your opinion, must all biologists refrain from being vegitarians?
I personally can comprehend reasons to be vegitarian, after dissecting (not just butchering) large numbers of animals.

After all, that kind of work could make sliced and cooked critter a bit unappetizing come dinner time.
I was responding not to that but to her reaction to what others eat as disgusting, in particular her reaction to tripe, which is a pretty inocuous substance and enjoyed all over the world, particularly in France where it's done up with Apple juice and Armignac. Oh, I don't know how "not normal" it is.
Seems tripe soup called "Philadelphia Pepperpot" is not only popular but a large contribution of it saved Washington's army during the revolutionary war.
And throughout the Southwest, the Mexican version, menudo, is eaten with enjoyment by both by Mexicans and white folks. Chinese versions abound around here as well, such as "tripe in fermented black bean sauce", very tasty indeed.
As for the stuff in head cheese, most of you folks cheerfully eat the same stuff in a form called "hot dogs" and "sausages" - just in a less honest format.
Any, all this stuff is easily available in quantity anywhere in the U.S. if you don't avoid looking for it, so somebody must be eating plenty of it over here.

Most (of the non-vegetarians) here seem to prefer their bologna "smooth", while I prefer it "chunky". That doesn't mean it isn't the same thing you know.
As far as ethnicity, yes. Most of my knowledge about how to make all this indelicate stuff comes not from land of origin (where they try to present a "cleaned-up" image to the world) but from proud ethnic communities in places like Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Illinois.
As for LA not being a representative sample, I'm sure glad of that - the "representative sample" voted for George W Bush.

I've had the extreme displeasure of living in the "heartland" (aka Mid-West aka Jesusland) for longer than I've lived anywhere else (almost 18 years). While I'll grant that there a pockets of civilization in Michigan, for the most part Michigan == Indiana == Illinois == Iowa == Ohio == Kansas == Nebraska. It's all the same everywhere in this cultural tundra. Damned pity such fertile soil is wasted here imo.

Well ...
Who can argue with that logic? Depends on whether you're asking who can argue that that logic is wrong, so equivalent to "argue against that logic"; or if you're asking who can use that logic with which to argue. Similar to the difference between "playing catch with the baby" and "playing catch with the baby". So yeah, we can argue with that logic several different ways.

Maybe some perspective will help.
CRC used to be able to flame like the Usenet trolls of yore. All and sundry were much impressed by his flamage, which became all the more impressive when we realized that he lived in Finland, and didn't speak English as his native language. He's also been quite coherent and has a point to make with his flames in the past.
He mainly takes the time to flame people he actually appreciates - not sure what the Freudian implications of that are, but if you've been flamed by him, you're pretty much guaranteed to be "one of the good guys."
Lately, however, his flames have been lacking a certain something. My guess is that fatherhood has mellowed our CRC a bit, and he just doesn't have the energy to really get ye old napalm chucker rolling any more...

Trust me, you get used to it
Because I think I liked it better when I was a nobody. I used to think that once, but once you become accepted and an actual part of IWT, everything fits into place, and everyone has their place. And well, when any of them are missing, it's just not the same place. Case in point, DeSitter, who left us a while back. Without his take on certain things, certain things seem lacking. Yeah, I know, he bugged all of us at one point or another, but he still contributed enough to be interesting and fill one of the gaps here. CRC is a wonderful person when you get to know him, understand the way he posts, and you might even come to enjoy him, as I have. :) Brenda

Don't have time to look up who said it . .
. . but here's a famous saying in the food biz:
"There are dishes found only in the palace and the peasant's hut. They are in the pesant's hut because they're cheap, and in the palace because they're good, and nowhere else because they're disgusting."
Aside from tipe and head cheese, pigs feet come to mind, and they are a favorite - fresh or pickled (but to get the best pickled you have to pickle them yourself - the ones in the barrel at a proper butcher shop are decent but "name brand" in jars are inedible).

Market tripe is like cheating.
It's all been scraped and washed so it's pure white. Straight from the cow it has a dark green coating that has to be scraped off.

Since the entrails are to be used . . .
. . for divination, I suppose they wouldn't let you eat it anyway.
My general advice is, if you can't face what it is, then you shouldn't be eating it - so you're on the right diet.
Having been raised on farms and been face to face with the necessities there, I've got a somewhat different attitude towards farm animals and life and death in general than city folks do.
