Welcome to IWETHEY!

New Here's how I do it.
They say a picture's worth a thousand words. That's not always true.

In the home, keeping it simple is paramount; you are the network administrator. Don't make a rod for your own back.

New How's that work
when serving things to the outside world? Well? You'd have to forward twice; do java applets freak, for example? (had that happen once long ago when I was experimenting with them long ago in a similar setup) I'm not trying to be a smartass for once, I'm curious whether it makes a difference.

New Re: How's that work
The SB4100 is transparent to the WBR2-54G.

As far as the router is concerned, the SB4100 is the internet.

New Nice. OK.
The problem back then could have been my setup, of course. I had my own rules via a Linux firewall/router, and I'm far from an iptables guru.

New Three words for you
VNC through SSH
--

And what are we doing when the two most powerful nations on earth -- America and Israel -- stomp on the elementary rights of human beings?

-- letter to the editor from W. Ostermeier, Liechtenstein

New I do that.
Well, apart from the SSH part. Although I can SSH into my server if need be.

And host my own web server, and mail server, and UT2K4 server (on occasion). If the Dell is running Windows, I tend to use RDP; it's more network-efficient than VNC.

New I use the SSH server on firewall
to tunnel to VNC on windows box.

If I replace the firewall with a "brick", I'd have to expose Windows ports to teh internet. I don't trust Windows IP stack that much.

New No, you wouldn't.
I'm not sure where you're getting that idea from.

Thanks Peter. Your picture shows the way I had imagnined setting up my system (see [link|http://z.iwethey.org/forums/render/content/show?contentid=201240|here]). I also note that you are using a 10.x.x.x address, which is a) different from the 192.168.x.x schemes that everyone else who posted here seems to want to use, and b) more to my liking (and experience).

Thanx!

New The reason I use a 10 address?
Less typing and it looks nicer.

New Personally, I always us 192.168.200.n . . .
. . and a router (gateway) address of .97 or .98. This lets me tell at a glance whether I set it up or someone else did.
