Welcome to IWETHEY!

New You should
Everyone should.
It's like Google being down.
New *yawn*

"They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety."
- Benjamin Franklin, 1759 Historical Review of Pennsylvania
New Uh...
Google: invaluable informational resource that I have set as my home page.
Slashdot: tons of stupid, uninteresting crap with the occasional link to a good article.

How exactly is it like Google being down...?

It was probably just a programming error in the Perl scripts.

New Oh, *slashdot*. Thanks for reminding me what /. means
New Huh? It's a slash and a dot - WTF else COULD it mean?!?
New Dry humor burns brightest--did you have to douse it?
New It's the famous CRC-o-Matic Frog-dissectotron!

Use P2P for legitimate purposes!
New Works even better as humour if it actually is *funny*. HTH!
New Huh? In what way?
I use Google all day long. I last looked at /. about 3 years ago, and that was about a month after the first time I looked at it.
[link|http://www.aaxnet.com|AAx]
New Fine, them I'm the only /. type geek here
New Well, at least the only one obsessing over it, maybe. ;-)
New I go there daily. Feel better? ;-P
Hate their comments/forums/whatever - LOVE the stories.

New In my aggregator at bloglines
But when I used to hit it directly, I notice that it became inaccessible at least a couple times a month (for short periods of time).
New Stopped going when they increased amount of mod points
I didn't see any formal announcement, but the typical front-page story went from about 10-20 +5 comments to well over 30 on almost every story. The obvious problem was that there was suddenly too much to keep up with. The more subtle problem was worse: Now that every semi-coherent comment was getting to +5 the real gems weren't getting noticed. The overall quality of visible comments went down sharply.

New If they'd have a separate category for "funny" it'd help.
The thing that bothers me most about /. is that a clear insightful comment earns the same amount as some stupid "[link|http://yro.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=139878&cid=11710830|"funny"] comment. I try to browse /. occasionally, showing comments above 3 or 4, but sometimes it seems 80% of them are [link|http://yro.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=139879&cid=11711174|"funny"] (even if the actual proportion is lower). It's maddening. They should have a checkbox to exclude [link|http://slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=139859&cid=11710717|"funny"] posts in the displayed articles.

But of course they'd never do that...

Cheers,
Scott.
New They do
you can configure your user preferences to ignore mod points for Funny. The problem is that the good comments are never seen, because the quick jokes pile up fast and furious, and by the time someone posts something thoughtful it's already buried.

New How?
Do you have to be logged in to get that functionality? I can't see it in the settings visible to me.

I think I have an account in the low 4 or 5 digit range, but I haven't logged into /. in ~ 5 years or more. I'm not sure I remember my password...

Thanks.

Oh, and I agree about the diamonds being buried under the mountain of coal slag.

Cheers,
Scott.
New Yes, have to be logged in
If you care, you can enter your email and have your password sent, but it's really not worth it any more IMO.

New I'm in Scott's boat
Plus I'm sure that I've changed email addresses once or twice since I created that account. So I'm not getting it back.

On the plus side, I have several times the maximum allowable karma.

Cheers,
Ben

New Not any more you don't
Before I stopped reading it -- but not much before, now that I think about it -- they changed karma. Instead of showing an actual number it was just "Good", "Excellent", etc.

New :-)
Apparently I never had an account - nothing shows up when I request my password. I think I posted something there long ago, but I must have been an AC. No idea what it was though...

No great loss.

I might sign up for an account just so that I can sort out the "funny" stuff.

Thanks.

Cheers,
Scott.
