Welcome to IWETHEY!

New first off they didnt describe how they came to
the conclusion of who belonged in which group, we might find a bunch of twitchy types were misallocated. Ability to succeed under preasure is a direct function of the flight/fight capabilities had dick all to do with memory, knowledge or test scores, its an emotional reaction. Now I will read Ben's edit

I love her dearly, far beyond any creature I've ever known, and I can prove it, for never once in almost seventy years of married life have I taken her by the throat. Mind you, it's been a near thing once or twice.

New I'd consider that fairly obvious
The categorization was based on how many items you can hold in short-term memory at once.

So you just tell someone a bunch of stuff and then have them recite it back to you within 30 seconds. The number of items that they can reliably keep in mind for short times tells you how much short term memory they have.

Cheers,
Ben

New thanks, it is obvious and I missed it :-)

New Apparently not enough, though.
New never enough, however I have met Reuben Pecarve
[link|http://www.pecarve.com/|http://www.pecarve.com/] and have watched him work a crowd by taking one hundred items from an audience have the audience place them on a grid then turn his back to the grid, with the crowd calling out the grid position he can name the item there. This is not a trick its trained observation.

When I say I met him I did not just watch a show but did some deprogramming with his assistance in technique and conquered some severe back injuries with self hypnosis as opposed to massive amounts of chemicals.

So short term memory is like a woody, if you think, it will happen

New That isn't short-term memory
That's a well-trained long-term memory.

Seriously, anything that you can maintain for more than 30 seconds is long-term memory. Long-term memory varies in length. But there is no difference in kind between what it takes to remember something for 5 minutes and 10 years. There is a difference in kind between what it takes to remember something for 20 seconds and 5 minutes.

We know that these really are different in the brain because there are people who have lost their ability to lay down long-term memory. Short term memory still works for them. They can also learn new skills. (Apparently people tend to be amazed when they "know" that they can't, say, play piano but they actually have the skill and just don't remember it...)

Cheers,
Ben
