Urgent question
I have an old computer that I urgently need to add memory to (as in, "right now"). Is it possible to use faster memory chips in slower motherboards? I doubt Staple will have suitable memory for an 866MHz Pentium 3

As long as the memory is of the same basic "type"...
...you're good to go. I.E., no mixing SDRAM with DDR SDRAM, chips must match the sockets, etc...
I'd be surprised if Staples HAS computer memory.

They do have it.
And many other things too. Surprising but true.

Make sure the memory is backwards-compatible
I found memory for my P2/333 about a year ago at Circuit City...And I just purchased memory for an AMD K2 with an FSB speed of 100/133. Shouldn't be that hard to find. Best Buy or Circuit City are the first places I would check around here.

In theory
In theory it should be. In practice, not only do you have forward / backwards compatability problems, but also mix and match problems. I've seen cases where a system would work with memory from vendors A + B and B + C but A + C together wouldn't work.
Still, as long as your mother board can recognize the memory, odds are it will work.

I couldn't with my Thinkpad
It takes PC100 and ONLY PC100. Memory labeled "PC133(works in PC100)" would not work.
I've been able to use faster memory in other systems though.

Only way to know is to try
It depends on the designer of the motherboard. I've seen some very tolerant and some completely intolerant.

50-50 chance.
I have used PC3200 Memory in a PC2100 fastest capable motherboard.
I have used PC2700 in PC1600.
I have also used PC133 in a PC100 ONLY motherboard... but
I have also had failures in all categories as well.
It realy depends on the Design and chipset. You might also want to update the BIOS of the motherboard while you are at it. The newer BIOS might have better support for memory types.

Re: Urgent question
Did you try eBay? or any computer shop in your area nearby - they might have as used parts.

Thanks for prompt responses
I thought that I couldn not open some documents on somebody else's computer becasue the computer did not have enough memory. Turned out, it was something else, so the question was rendered moot.
