Best way to learn Java?
I still see more listings for Java developers than anything else[1]. So I've decided to start learning it. Any good tutorials to start with? And what should I install here to be able to do it?
[1] Except "Microsoft Developer", which, considering that would mean three or more completely different languages over time, doesn't really mean anything. And I don't want to do that anyway.

Study the Sybex book
Complete Java\ufffd 2 Certification Study Guide, 4th Edition
Really.
Run through it 1/2 a dozen times before you start on the computer itself. Do NOT read a chapter, do some exercises. read another, do some more, etc. Study the book first for quite a while, end to end.
And then start going through the exercises. Take the tests at the end of each chapter. Multiple times. Until you have internalized the WHY things are a certain way, as well a WHAT.
At the same time, work the the "Core" Java series from PTR/PH-Sun publishing.

That's odd
The [link|http://www.sybex.com/sybexbooks.nsf/booklist/4077?OpenDocument|original] lists for $59.99, online for $15. The [link|http://www.sybex.com/sybexbooks.nsf/booklist/4276?OpenDocument|4th Editition] lists for $49.99, online for $39.99. I think I'll try the library first in any case.

Nothing odd about it
Prices drop. Original publication price was when Java was HOT. Later publication prices are in a more competitive market. But the most recent one is still more relevant, so its current selling price is more than the older one, even though the older one started at a higher price.

/me kicks self
I knew I should have paid more attention to the work on the new backend. This is (was) the project I should have tried ot learn on, seeing as I already know the problem space somewhat.
Well, I guess it's never too late to start ...
[edit] So, what do I need to install to start playing? Is there a debian package that will get everything I need, or am I better off getting it direct from Sun? And are there tools that would help get up the learning curve, or am I better learning it from a text editor from the start?

Check out [link|http://www.javajunkies.org/index.pl?node_id=4117|this node on JJ] for a quick assist on getting Sun's Java 1.5 installed on your Debian box. For learning Java stuff, I recommend using your commandline and text editor until you're comfortable with how to create and compile classes, packages, etc. Run 'em a few times, and make sure you have everything down pat. Then, if you want, switch to an IDE. I use NetBeans, and I've used Eclipse in the past. Scott's gotten me interested in checking out (I think it was) IDEA. Sounded interesting.

Go read the language definition
and browse the API docs.
Dry, but quite sufficient. And free.
