10 Votes! TEN!! VOTES!!!
[link|http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/chi-0412230225dec23,1,4153985.story?coll=chi-newsnationworld-hed|Who says your vote doesn't count] (except in Ohio...): Democrat leads recount
Washington governor's race results reversed
By Sarah Kershaw New York Times News Service Published December 23, 2004
SEATTLE -- After a bitter and protracted recount fight in the Washington governor's race, election officials announced Wednesday that Democrat Christine Gregoire was leading her Republican opponent by 10 votes--a minuscule margin but a reversal of the Nov. 2 election results.
The preliminary results elated Democratic Party officials, and the announcement came only hours after the state Supreme Court had agreed with the Democrats' contention that more than 700 newly discovered and erroneously disqualified ballots in heavily Democratic King County should be counted.

Thane, what's the story from where you are? Bolstered by this, the Demos should now move on to Ohio!

In a weird way...
I wanted Dino to win. Not because I liked him (I voted for Gregoire) but because I'm a firm believer that gridlock produces better legislation. Both candidates are acting like spoiled brats - Dino started first, but Gregoire has been slowly sliding down to his level with various acts of hipocracy, at least the way I saw it.
To be honest, I haven't followed this too closely.

Gridlock and progress...
I could careless if there is gridlock, as long as progress is made... progress BAD or Progress GOOD. Either way the correction factor built-in to the political gridlock is what makes it the best.
Now, what we have for for an immoral majority right now... is sickening.
Some people I know were scared to vote for Kerry, he actually scared many people I know. They didn't want Bush either. So they voted for one of the other candidates that were not Nader.
Throw away votes yes... but it almost made a difference.

At this point, you may as well flip a coin
No way you can count 2.5 million votes with such precision.

Sure you can
It helps if they're all actually little pieces of paper with circles that a voter can put an X into, though.

but they put a check mark or circled it instead
circled, checked and x'ed the name while leaving the circle to the right untouched, do they count? Count for whom? regards, daemon

They don't count
That's called a spoiled ballot.
The incidence of those is pretty low, ime (I've counted ballots in four elections). My personal fave was the one where they guy wrote along the bottom "I think you all suck."
Still didn't count, though. The rules are clear, and are clearly posted; if you want your ballot to count, put the X in the circle. Point final.

see here we have a law "the intent of the voter"
that wouldnt fly at all and was the point of all the lawsuits. If you dont count those ballots you are disenfrachising black voters, (in the majority of cases). regards, daemon

Dunno 'bout that
but generally speaking, the "black" folks up here (who are mostly from South Asia) don't seem to have huge problems marking ballots correctly.
You should come up, get your citizenship, and try scrutineering for one of the parties. You'd see how it actually works in the Real World.

Actually, that's Florida only....
and it's based on case law. (An interesting case, btw...especially if you think 10 votes is a small amount)
In any case, Florida isn't Washington...different rules apply.

Yes. We have those little pieces of paper...
Everyone is crazy about them. We call them "dollars" :)
It would be interesting to know what are standard accounting practices when dealing with $2.5 mln cash at the point of sale. Do bookkeepers require prescise accounting? Or some of it is allowed to go missing and is written off?

Based on my cash handling experience
Down to the penny.
I was in charge of the check disbursing section for the US Army in Europe. Monthly expenditures had to balance to the penny.
Also in charge of the cash vault, funded military (US) banks in Europe. Also had to balance to the penny. One time, just after receiving a cash resupply shipment (3 milvans == 40' trailers) of coins, we had a surprise cash count. We were off in the count in the vault. I had to move every box (22"x11"x7", ~70#) until I found which boxes were stacked in the wrong place (Each box was coded with contents - penny/nickel/dime/quarter - paper money boxes balanced). 5 hours and 3000 boxes later, the vault balanced.

That's the general attitude of accountants everywhere.
Remember, a hacker/spy ring in East Germany was busted because someone in the Western U.S. found his accounts out of balance by $0.01 and investigated why.

You're talking about bulk cash
pre-packaged and labeled. At least you had to shift boxes, not count individual coins. I am mostly wondering about POS experience, where you (may) have "give-a-penny-take-a-penny" bin. But thanks for your data point.
