Seeing as how in the *first* place, were those aforementioned illiterate colonial baboons not grasping the language, I mean.

(This is a serious question, not a smirking put-down: How *does* the lingo work in this respect; is it "the first place ... the second place", or are they both firsts because they're *different* things?)
