Welcome to IWETHEY!

New We'll see. Boston leads 1:0 in the top of the 3rd.
Pedro usually makes me nervous. :-(

Cheers,
Scott.

New If the Cards would stop screwing up on the base running...
...they might be way ahead. Couple of really bonehead decisions on the base running. And the look like they have lead feet.
New It's too cold, too wet, and too late
It's stupid to play three series - this isn't hockey. Baseball should be over by mid Ocotber, and should be played during the day. All three games are just fugly. 8 Boston errors, stupid baserunning by the Cards, it just sucks and it's not interesting.

New It's like a stranded supertanker approaching the shore.
It's hard not to watch, but it's not pretty baseball, that's for sure.

The playoffs are good for baseball. But if they want to have them then they need to find a way to have the season end before now. Maybe more double-headers or something. Having the season start in March obviously isn't a solution.

4:0 Boston in the middle of the 6th.

Cheers,
Scott.
New Re: It's like a stranded supertanker approaching the shore.
This might be the least interesting series I can remember, despite my love for both teams. It's like neither side gives a shit. Every game has been played in miserable conditions - in earlier days, the games would have been called (e.g. game 7 of 1975 Reds-Red Sox), and certainly the weekend games would not have been played at night.

Did you see right field? It's a damned mud lake out there. I've NEVER seen Busch look so wretched.

And you know what? *I* don't really give a shit. Something about Manny Ramirez tripping over his stylish pants in game 1 just put me off the whole deal. It's not baseball. I predict baseball will soon die, the way hockey is dying, unless something is done to make it more balanced for small markets and the stupid season is shortened so that the thing can end sometime in early October. We don't need the stupid wild card for one thing - it's a total waste of time.

New I haven't seen the whole game tonight.
My uberredsoxfan wife was too nervous to watch the early innings. :-)

There have been a lot of mistakes, no doubt about it. But Schilling did a great job. There has been some clutch hitting when necessary.

The weather (the cold in Boston, the wet in St. Louis) has caused a lot of the problems that the players are having. It is a swamp in right. I hope Nixon wasn't seriously hurt in his fall. :-(

We'll see how it turns out.

Cheers,
Scott.

New The championship series were quite good
as the match ups were much better. The teams play a different style of ball, and thus far it's just been a hitfest. No real drama just yet.

As for the small markets, the Diamondbacks and Marlins aren't considered to be major media markets, and they managed to go all the way. Problem really is that a few players - mostly pitchers - make all the difference. Schilling and Clemons being the obvious difference makers this year.

Of course, what we need to get around weather problems is domed stadiums, but I don't seem to recall that you looked very kindly on the Astros facility. :-)
New Re: The championship series were quite good
WADR, what we need to do to get around bad weather, is to wait for good weather, and use the Sun to good advantage. The Sun is that bright, warm thing that appears 2 or 3 times a month in the St. Louis and Boston skies during October.

Domed stadia are an atrocity on sport. We have one of the worst in the TWA(*splat*)Edward Jones Dome. Somewhere in that somber cave, the Rams have been known to play a game that closely resembles football.

New Walker tried to make it interesting. Boston wins 4:1
Foulke is very good, but he too often gives up home runs. Luckily, the Sox had a big enough lead.

Cheers,
Scott.
New We watched parts of it
And it was a sloppy mess of a field, and I'm sure that didn't help anything. But I thought they used to put tarps on the field and such to protect the turf, so I guess I'm wondering if it was actually raining while they were playing? It didn't seem to be, but I could be wrong.

John's last day of work tomorrow (before he takes a nice vacation until November 7th, he goes back the 8th), is a Cardinal Spirit Day, and this is the first Cardinal Spirit day his company has had that the Cardinals have lost, so maybe tomorrow will go better.

New The pattern is now clear
After totally stinking up both joints due to lack of rest and sorry pitching (please, please trade Suppan), the Cardinals will now win 4 straight including the clincher in Baaahstin, thereby ensuring that the legend of the Red Sox curse lives on forever.

New Disagree. The stars seem to be aligned for the Sox.
[link|http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/articles/2004/10/27/one_win_to_go_for_the_crown/|Red October].

Like champions, they're finding ways to win even when they make mistakes. To wit: Bad umpire calls did not go against them. Their pitching has been very good on the whole. Their hitting has always given them the lead. Last night Pedro showed that, once he gets in a groove, he can come through and do an excellent job when it counts (unlike in previous years and unlike when Roger was on the team).

It would be amazing for them to win 8 straight (4 against the Yankees and 4 against St. Louis), but if Lowe is on tonight it's possible. He was fabulous against the Yankees in game 7.

We'll see what happens, but Boston has an excellent chance to take the prize this year. In the World Series anyway. Though things seem to be tilting Kerry's way, I'm not yet confident that he'll take that other prize next week....

Cheers,
Scott.
New Some numbers
(No, not my dismal gambling numbers).

Out of 240 swings, Red Sox have only fanned 11 times - making some sort of contact on the other 229. Means the Cards pitchers are not engaging in successful deception.

In the 4-5-6 batter position, the usual scoring positions, the Cards are 1 for 31. Means there clean up batters are not getting the job done.
New Total eclipse tonight during the game :)
